|

I am currently using an Axim X5 wired into my old Garmin 2+ unit with a serial cable and running TomTom quite OK.
However I have ordered a new Axim X51v as the screen on my X5 is giving up the ghost. The problem is that there doesnt seem to be a a serial cable readily available to connect the X51v to the Garmin.
I also have a Garmin 60CSX with a USB output. I have tried to get this USB connection to work with the X5 using a normal hotsync cable but no luck.
The USB connection works OK plugged into a PC so it must be the PDA end that is the problem.
Is there any way to use the USB connection with the X5 and X51v?
Any ideas please
Thanks

You cannot connect any GPS to the USB port of a PDA because GPS connects only via serial port.
Do you mean a Garmin 12+ (not a 2+)?
We have cable for connect X5 or X51 to 12+ or 60cs.
There are many options/combinations please see:

GRDC - for use with Garmin 12+ and 60cs
GAX5- interface for X5
GX50P - interface for X51 _________________ Pc-Mobile

Thanks for the reply.
No, I do mean a a 2+, its an old unit, about 10years old I think
Im not sure what you mean about only being able to connect the GPS via a serial port.
The 60 CSX certainly has a USB port which connects quite happily to a USB port on the PC. I assume that as there is an output from the GPS USB port it should be possible to pick up this signal with the PDA somhow as the PDA uses a USB connection with a PC. |

60CS does have a serial port for connecting a PDA.
Forget about the 12+ and X5
GPRX50 will connect 60cs/cx and X51 and powers X51 in car.
Add PB4A and you can power it outdoors.
Add GAX5 and you can also connect X6 with 60cs.
GPS must use it own batteries though. _________________ Pc-Mobile

I did mean X5, not X6 above.
It is not possible to edit or delete in these forums which is a bit annoying some times.
Still I should have checked everything before I hit the submit button. _________________ Pc-Mobile

Hi Brian,
No, pc-mobile was correct, it is NOT possible to use a USB connection between a GPS and a PDA. The reason is that USB is not "symmetrical" like RS232, it has a specific "Host" and "Client". This is why the connectors are different, and "gender changers" do not exist for USB (because they would not work). The PC is normally the Host; PDA and GPS are only Clients (that cannot initiate communications).
There are a few PPCs that do have a limited Host capability (e.g. the two in my signature file), but even these cannot comunicate with a USB-only GPS, because nobody has written the USB-drivers (software) which tells the PPC how to "talk" to the GPS.
Cheers, Alan. _________________ Garmin GPS72H/76/60/45, Etrex H, Mapsource v6.5.
