Hi all

I have just bought the above although havent received it as yet Sad and have a few questions to ask please.

I have purchased a 1gb sd Card can I use this as opposed to the 512mb supplied ? and it is it just a question of transfereing the data off the Via michelin CD? Confused

Is there anyting else that I should be aware of?

Thanks guys

No, You cant just transfer the info from the CD, there's a bit more to it than that. you have to copy the SD Card either with a card reader, or like this.

If you have ViaMitchelin, and want to copy the SD card onto a bigger
card, you can copy the SD card onto your pc, then back onto a bigger
SD card. Some say use the Microsoft Sync, some say use a card reader.
If you use Microsoft Sync, conect PDA, Open Sync, and click on explore,
and find the ViaMitchelin SD card.
Then Make a file in "My Documents",on the PC called "ViaMitchelin Backup",
or whatever, and in that file make 5 Files, and name them the same as the
ones on the SD card(they must be named the same, capitals, when it is in
capitals, lower case, etc, they must be named using the same letters)
like this, 0 2577 InstallSD MapSonic_Maps PALM
Then starting with file "0" , on the SD card, double click on it, and
open it, and copy/paste each file into the "0" file you made in
"My Documents", then go on to "2577" on the SD card, and copy/paste
everything onto the "2577" file in "My Documents". The "0" and "2577"
folders only have one file in them, so thats easy, now go on to "InstallSD",
This folder has 14 files in it and one folder, again, copy every file,
one at a time, and paste each one into the "InstallSD" file in "My Documents",
then make a file and name it the same as the file name, "MapSonic"and open
the "MapSonic" folder on the SD card and copy/paste everything into the
"MapSonic" folder in "My Documents", each file, one at a time. Carry on
till you have coppied the whole card, there are some folders that are empty,
just make a new folder, name it, and thats it, when you have finished,
check you have all the right files in the right folders, in the right places,
the SD card and the "ViaMitchelin Backup" you have just made should look
identical. If you check the Bytes on the SD card, it comes to about 117MB,
then check the copy you have made, and that will be about 117MB too, if
its less, you have missed a file somewhere.
Now you should have a copy of your SD card on your PC, now take the
original ViaMitchelin SD card out the PDA, and put your 1GB card in, and
click on "Explore" on active sync, find your 1GB SD card, and do the same
again, make 5 folders, name them, copy each file, and paste each file etc
till you have everything copied onto the 1GB card, check it, and thats it.
You can now use your original ViaMitchelin SD card as a Backup, keep it in
a safe place, and use your copy. I did try copying everything all in one go,
but it missed files, I tried copying a folder at a time, but that missed
files too, so I had to copy each file, one at a time, you could try copying
whole folders, but make sure you have everything, look at the bytes. A card reader
is much quicker, I think they are about £20, and it just copys the whole card
but I have never used one. My way works, but it is a bit long winded, its how
I got my ViaMitchelin onto my 128MB card, but DON'T Move or Delete anything
from the original SD card.

The ViaMitchelin Card (with UK and Irland) is on a 128 SD Card so 256 is big enough to copy everything and have room for POi's, or have you bought a Europe map or whatever?

Tanda

Thanks very much for you post really really helpful

I bought a 1 g card as I have ordered france map and would like to add POIs etc to the card

I can alwys use the 1 g card in my camera Laughing

Really looking forward to getting this budget GPS, and have heard some pretty good reviews on it.

So the unit comes with a 512 card so what you are saying is that it should be enough to store most things.

Is there a way of making the unit portable? ie use on my bike

thanks again really helpful stuff there

Hi, If you have got the French map on a 512 card, you may need the 1GB card, you need space to put POi's on, and ViaMitchelin use the space on the card to calculate a route. On my original card, If I tried to go somewhere say 200 plus miles, it would throw up an error, there wasn't enough space to calculate the route. The UK map is about 117MB so it only leaves 12MB for POi's and calculations, so a 256MB card is assential with the UK map. You would think ViaMitchelin would give you one as standard, penny pinching so and so's Laughing Out Loud. You could try the original card, get it to plan a route of 300 or 400 miles, if it throws up an error, copy it onto the 1GB card. If it calculates the route, I would say it will be ok, but you might like to get another 512 card, and copy it, and run ViaMitchelin from the copy, and keep the original in a safe place as a master copy, which is what I do. I don't want to add anything onto my original and risk corrupting it. If I muck the copy up, I simply copy the original again.
To make it portable, it depends what you have, I'm not too well up on this. Has your PDA got Bluetooth, you could get a GPS reciever that connects by bluetooth, and there are other recievers that connect via a slot on the top of the PDA. My pda is very basic, no slot, or blutooth, so I can't use it mobile, it has to fit in the cradle, which has the GPS reciever built in.
Are you going to use the speed cam database on here, I use it?

Hi Tanda

Thanks again i have sent a pm

I am not too sure what i am going to use on it TBH, I think the normal camera POIs are quite good apparently but not too sure if it announces that there is a camera up ahead.

So you think the via michelin softwre will be preinsalled on the 512 card?
If so i will slide the little catch on it to save deleting anything on there. then transfer everything over as you said

TIM :D :D :D :D
