I think we all know that you can get the ocassional incorrect speed reading caused by a 'spike' when the sat signal gets lost then picked up again, but my most recent spurious reading is my best yet.. oh how I laughed....

Overall Ave 381 MPH
Moving Ave 866 MPH
Max speed 956 MPH

(over a 56.8 mile journey 'leg')

I've got a pic of the Quest screen, but wasn't sure how to post it here.

Now Ducati's are fast, but not that fast..

Anyone had a higher reading from their Quest?

956 ! I can't beat that, that's supersonic! Not Worthy

This max speed (bottom right corner) is REAL though - it was recorded on a Boeing 777-200 on the way to Auckland with a 130 MPH tail wind!

Skippy, that elevation is a little suspect, isn't it? Laughing

The most my old SprintST 'did' was around 350mph a few years back.

Skippy, how did you sue your Quest in NZ? I'm off there in a couple of weeks but available routable mapping seems pricey and limited. Also what datum do you use there?

I had a copy of the NZ maps on my old GPS-V a few years ago (non routable) but they weren't much use without the routing.

I mainly used the GPS to mark waypoints of interesting places and for when we were out fishing on the boat. (The nice thing about the Quest is that is works well off road)

As you observe, there are now routable maps from Garmin but I couldn't justify buying them for a 4 week trip. I know my way around NZ pretty well so it would have been more of a nice to have than anything.

If you are outside the main cities then you don't really need sat nav. I just use one of the "Kiwi Pathfinder" map books which are very good and show the tourist spots too.

Enjoy your trip!

Check out http://gwprojects.orcon.net.nz/gps/gps.htm they have free maps of NZ.

You can get routable maps from here, I don't know how good they are. http://www.nzgpsmaps.com/Garmin.htm

Garmin also do a Mapsource New Zealand which you have probably heard of...
