|
|
For years I have carried an external power pack for recharging my mobile phone or TomTom GO750 with no problems. Now, however, I am using a TomTom GO1005 and find that the external pack starts to recharge the unit but switches off after 10 seconds. The pack still works fine with the GO750 and my phone, so what have TomTom done to make it not work with the GO1005? The battery pack has a standard usb output socket. |

Possible that the GO 1005 is drawing more power than the power pack you have can provide.
What's the rated output of the power pack? Many are 0.5A or 1A which is fine for stuff that will run from the USB output on a computer but not enough for more power hungry devices.
USB is a standard for socket design but the power demands of devices that use them can, and do, vary wildly.
I'd suggest getting one that can provide 2A @5v, that should be plenty. _________________ Darren Griffin |

My limited understanding/knowledge of electronics led me to suspect that might be the problem. The power pack is rated 5v 700ma. I think I'll be looking for a beefier pack. |

I've just checked the bottom of the GO1005 and it says 5V DC 1.2 Amp. |

There's your answer then. You need a 1.5 or 2A power pack.
This one from Amazon has a useful 8400mAh capacity and two outputs, one rated at 600mA and a high power one rated at 2A. All for £23.00

Thanks Darren, I'll add that to my wish list which I'll conveniently leave lying around where my good wife will find it; never fails! |

I knew it would work; my lovely wife saw my want list and found a similar item at local Maplin's shop, except it is 10000 mAh. Result!!! |

I doff my cap to you, that's one masterful piece of reverse psychology in action there!
10,000mAh is a very useful capacity, I trust it has a high power output too? _________________ Darren Griffin |

The link given by Darren is the item in question. I tried it yesterday and powered my GO1005 for seven hours and it was still showing as having 30%-70% power remaining. My job entails driving cars around the country and occasionally I get one where the power point isn't working, which is why I have to carry a backup power supply with me. This one is perfect for my requirements. |
