I use a SysOnChip CF card antenna (Model number SOC1S04 purchased December 2004) with my iPAQ 2210 running TomTom 5 and CheckPOInt.

I am truly delighted with this setup but experience one irritating fault; sometimes on startup it takes an age (45+ minutes) to get a satellite fix. Other times the antenna gets a fix quickly, then after a few minutes loses-regains-loses-regains-etc the fix, before eventually keeping it. In both scenarios if I press the reboot pip on the back of the iPAQ, I then get a satellite fix within a few seconds that it holds perfectly.

I have not discovered any pattern to this fault which can happen even if the iPAQ hasn't been moved since last used and is used outside in clear air. TomTom is always exited properly before switching off the iPAQ (I know "off" isn't really "off") and equally I always wait for a fix before starting CheckPOInt and TomTom.

In case relevant, TomTom is set for "other cable NMEA GPS" with a 4800 baud rate.

Is this a known issue with a known resolution, please?
Apologies if I have missed an answer despite searching before posting.

I would have said "blame the satellite constellations" but in your case it may have a completely different cause. How about doing a soft reset before you attempt to get a fix and then run a navigation software?

I thought I'd explained, but let's try again:

"power off - power on" (a soft reset in my book) by pressing the iPAQ power switch is what gives this occasional fault; satellite fix is usually a handful of seconds but occasionally up to 45 minutes (unless I give up waiting and perform the solution below).

"pressing the reset pip" (a hard reset in my book) always clears the fault; satellite lock is within just a handful of seconds

As written previously I never start an application until a fix is obtained. (i.e the SysOnChip status light stops blinking and becomes constant)

Cheers.
