I was recently sitting in the front of a queue at a red traffic light when a police car came racing up behind me with blue lights flashing.

In the absence of a red light camera, my natural instinct was to edge forward, making room for the police car to come through and I guess I made the right choice because the driver nodded to thank me.

However, does anybody know what the courts view to be the correct procedure in such circumstances - especially in the presence of a red light camera Question

Does anybody even know who to contact in order to get an 'official' view on such a scenario?

if i got a 'red light ticket' then i'd be tempted to phone them to ask for a copy of the photo. not to deny it but i'd mention that i believe it was when i moved out of the way of a police car and i want to see if the police car is also on the picture.

to be honest though, i'm not sure how far past the redlight you need to be to trigger them...

Yes, it's a grey area that nobody seems know the answer to.

It also depends how close the car behind is and whether the camera has a clear view of your number plate.

I'm not sure there's a "Tax the motorist" department within the government and a letter to the DOT would probably just get lost.

response from West Yorkshire Safety Camera Partnership:

Quote:
Difficult to give a full and appropriate answer without either witnessing the incident or viewing photographs of any subsequent detected offence. Best I can suggest is: while it is true that you may have crossed the stop line against the red light in order to get out of the way of an emergency vehicle, the red light camera would have been triggered by the emergency vehicle and so it ought to be clear on any photogtaph of that, that you had moved your vehicle out of its way, rather than committing an offence. However, best advice if you receive a notice of intended prosecution is to seek legal advice on how to present your case to magistrates...

Well, that looks like typical "black" and white civil servant speak and doesn't really clear anything up.

I'll try contacting my local safety camera partnership and see if they can alter that shade of grey at all.

A friend at works daughter got photographed by red light camera after pulling forward to let an ambulance through. When she got the ticket she told them what had happened and they told her it did not matter she should not have gone through the red light. This was in the Croydon area.

imagine though what the emergency services would have said to the person who refused to move out their way for fear of getting a fine... pathetic isn't it...

Yes, I had thought of that - but it's not the sort of thing you talk about at a time like we're discussing here.

Where I live, there a police on pushbikes - next time I see one I might ask this very question.

Funny enough, they don't have blues lights on their helmets - so would I have to move out of their way?

No reply from my local camera partnership as yet - but I guess there would be if it had a fine attached

Still no reply from my camera partnership...

...I bet they would be more communicative though if you were 'paying' £60 and 3 points for the privelege of their corresppondence Exclamation

I'll try re-sending my e-mail and see if that provokes a response.

Red roses are far more popular than white ones!!! (and more romantic)

Guess where I was born and bred...but the war of the roses came almost as far south as where I live now, so we'd better not start.

There's nowt so queer as folk
