Just done this, this afternoon 52pence for a mono female jack connector and it fits snug between the two locating lugs inside the case. I have set volume to 5 in the car but with earphone 1 or 2 is loud enough. Mind you with me loud pipes on my Harley I might need # 5 Laughing Out Loud.

First off, hello to all Welcome - Excellent source of info this is & it's helped me make my mind up as to what system to get (on a shoestring budget that is) for my bike.
As my electrical skills are about as much use as an ashtray on my Bandit Embarassed , could someone plz do a step-by-step guide for installing a headphone jack to an i3 (I will be getting a more proficient m8 to do the required soldering of course!)

Welcome Jack, tools needed, T6 torx driver, (to open unit), soldering iron, solder, drill(to enable plug cable to be fed through the rear), jack plug (female).

open unit, open a beer
gently prise gubbings from rear of casing
drill hole in back of unit (see my pic) - drink beer
locate internal speaker - drink beer
pass cable from plug through hole you just drilled - drink beer
solder the two leads from female plug socket (one to each of the wires on the internal speaker)
put all back together

drink more beer!

DO NOT RIDE UNTIL SOBER!! Confused 8O Confused Rolling Eyes Rolling Eyes Rolling Eyes

Just ask at Maplins for a Mono female jack connector for an earphone.
52 pence in the Watford store.

You can do it two ways as said in previous post have a wire hanging out the rear with the connector on or my way actually fitting the female to the case like in a walkman/ipod etc.

When your mate opens the front cover off place it to one side that's the screen (keep away from dust etc.)
Then gently prising the unit from the back you will then have a couple of inches to play with of wire that is soldered to the printed circuit and the speaker.

Looking into the back of the cover (that holds the speaker) you will see 4 locating points (female) drill in between the two nearest the original speaker, and you will find that the connector from Maplins fits in a treat and does not protrude on to any thing else.

Solder either side on the lugs (ie) 9 o'clock and 3 o'clock and onto either wire on speaker and replace.

I found that level 2 or 3 is only needed on the bike where in the car with radio etc I level it to 5. Mind you I wear an open face and it's a (tractor) Harley...Laughing Out Loud.

Yup - your picture works just fine. Most mini jacks can be wired to cut out tyhe main speaker too - which is what I plan to do. Now you've taken the plunge and done it (which shows there must be enough room inside I defo going to do it! All we need now is a waterproof jacket that still makes the screen readable. Freezer bags are bot that good for visibility!

tried clingfilm?

keep some slack in the clingfilm so you can use the scroll wheel.

At last my lickle i3 has arrived !! Jumping With Joy

VERY with a capital VERY pleased so far...managed to safely navigate myself round the north-face of my local shops (my kids were adamant that they already knew the way but i wasn't listening) & then it safely took my missus to the local shopping mall (worse luck!!)

Like a kid at chrimbo I then attached my extremely yummy mount (care of monsieur gonzales - mucho gracias) to my Bandit & stood back & admired my new set-up :D

Now to take the plunge & get it wired for sound ie. headphones. Me Me Me

Call me Mr. Thicky if you want but could I please have a shopping list of exactly everything I need to get the job done ie. scredrivers, wires, jacks etc (please bear in mind that I already have the beer! Wink )

ok, here goes,

a T6 Torx driver (to open unit)
a female jack connector, eithe like picture above or a wired one like mine,
bought a blister pack in maplin for bout a fiver, which included female connector and a curly extender lead!! - bargain)
Another female connector to wire into a flat ear piece inside lid
BEER
solder
solder iron
a loose cable tie

theory:-
open unit,
locate internal speaker,
drill hole in rear of i3 (4mm ish)
pass cable from female plug (if chosen cable version) through drilled hole
solder female jack connector to internal speaker (tag for tag)
put unit back together
plug in curly extension lead to unit and lid,
TA-DAAA!!!

(remember, some female jack plugs have a 3 way possible connector, not just two, make sure you marry these up true!)

drink beer, but not for me, had enuf tonite
BED now
any probs pm me!
night all!
