I'm thinking about upgrading my 3970 to 2003 based on the reported faster speeds running the new OS and better Bluetooth stability.
I'm a little ignorant about how the upgrade occurs - is it the same as a ROM upgrade - and does it make the whole 2.00 2.10 ROM choice on the 3970 obsolete. I'm still running the 2.00 version of the ROM.
Thanks, |

Nickos,
What do you currently use BT for?
If you want to rely on the automatic connection to an Emtac or other BT GPS then 2003 does not do this. You will have to select your device.
As far as stability goes, my 3870 with the latest ROM upgrade was as stable as my 2210 is now. Only difference is my Nokia 6310i wouldnt work with the new 2003 BT stack, so I had to upgrade my phone as well. _________________ Mike Barrett |

Mike,
I use BT for connecting to my TomTom BT GPS and my Sony Ericsson T68i. Whenever I turn my iPAQ off while TTN2 is running and then turn it back on (e.g. going into the grocery store) - it never 'finds' the GPS when I turn it back on. I've got to do a soft reset (even w/ 2.07 of the GPS driver).
When you say:
If you want to rely on the automatic connection to an Emtac or other BT GPS then 2003 does not do this. You will have to select your device.
what do you mean - does it act differently than 2002 in this regard. WOuld I have to go the the BT manager every time I turned on the iPAQ?
Thanks, |

Nickos,
It is not so much the difference between the 2002 and 2003, more the difference between 3870/3970 and 5450 BT operation.
I have made the assumption that when HP release 2003 for the 3970 they will upgrade the BT manager to that released with the 5450 and subsequent PDAs. This requires you to select which device you want to connect to every time you open a BT connection. With your existing BT manager a paired connection will automatically be remade when the com port is open, with the new BT manager when you open the comport you are presented with a screen to select your required device. _________________ Mike Barrett |

My understanding is that all Pocket PC 2003 devices use the Bluetooth manager built in to Pocket PC 2003. That seemed to be one of the features Microsoft was advertising heavily for Pocket PC 2003. I therefore suspect that Bluetooth will work in the same way as on the 2210.
I've got an upgrade kit for my 3970 on order - but the ship date keeps getting pushed back. When I get the kit I'll be able to let people know!

Another old thread that might benefit from some up-to-date information.
HP don't use the MS Bluetooth stack on any of their Pocket PC 2003 devices - instead they use an updated version of the Widcomm stack they used under Pocket PC 2002. It works basically the same on all Pocket PC 2003 devices, but some, including the 3970, have the "out" serial port as COM5: and the "in" one as COM8:. These assignments are not changeable (except possibly by registry editing, which can't be recommended) - but they can be viewed from the Serial Port tab of Bluetooth Settings.
As a result, on some Pocket PC 2003 iPAQs, like the 3970, you use COM5: to connect to a Bluetooth GPS - and on others you use COM8:.
