The TomTom ONE arrived by surprise late last year and caught everyone on the hop.

With a SiRFStarIII GPS Chipset and new slim format design it has already proved to be a popular choice selling very strongly in the few weeks between launch and Christmas.

We have now completed our review of the ONE and you can read our opinion of this little upstart here

Hi all, about the battery i have been using a one for a few weeks now and can get over 3 hours without external power. I have disabled bluetooth as this may affect power consumption.

Thanks for the update, I'll test with Bluetooth off to see how much it improves matters Smile

my only question with regard to the ONE and in fact the GO range also. Are they updateable at all. ie should they build a new housing estate or put a new roundabout in, is there anyway to download any mapping upgrades to these units. Grateful for any replies recieved!

All TomTom products (Navigator, GO, Rider, Palm, ONE) are updateable both for software and map data.

Traditionally, TomTom issues updates for its products on SD card or CD in the second quarter of each year. However they (TomTom) have recently started to sell maps that can be downloaded from their website so they may use this method in the future. Personally I prefer a CD as I then have a permanent copy in case my PC loses it! ;)

As for whether that new housing estate or roundabout is included, that depends on the mapping company, which is Tele Atlas. However for some strange reason TomTom use the Navteq mapping company for the TomTom Rider.

Regards,

On past experience the map upgrades have come in at around 60.

Don't hold your breath though. Where i live, for the past 46 years, they have the name of the road wrong i've sent in the errors for the past 3 years, and it's still named wrong.

Very confusing for people who use the postcode feature, as it comes up with the wrong street name.

If I bought a One and then latter wanted to buy European or US maps would they work in the One, they guy in Halfords said that you couldn't but to be honest I felt that most of the stuff he was sprouting was made up.

Yes the european maps will work, see the page on the Tom Tom site for the accessories below, just click on select product then choose One & you will see a full range of maps. I find that the Halfords staff are usually only kids that serve you, with very little knowledge of sat navs.

I'm very tempted by the One for its size and SiRFStarIII, but from what I understand it doesn't power down when power is removed and can't be fully integrated, which won't matter to everybody but does to me.

Regarding price, adding the SD card with map of Europe on SD will make it about the same price as the Go 700 which offers handsfree phone capability, mains charger, case and remote control. Since I need European maps, it looks as though I should buy the 700.

Am I missing something?

Any speculation on whether TomTom might offer a version of the One packaged with maps of Europe? Or a 700 with SiRFStarIII?

I don't plan to buy until late March and am hoping there will be some announcements before then.
