does anyone use their TomTom and PDA to get close to a geocache location downloaded from www.geocaching.com? I would like to be able to download geocache locations meeting specified criteria provided for on the web site, then using something similar to this traffic camera application, convert the data into POIs. Do you think this could be done? It would be a huge hit in the geocache world I think. _________________ long time Mac user & devotee, Palm TREO 650, TomTom Navigator |

Hi there
Yes you can. As a geocaching.com premium member I've got pocket queries set up for the caches I'm interested in, so every week I get emails with the up-to-date GPX files attached.
I save the files, import into GSAK, then manipulate and export the data from GSAK in any number of formats - in my case this includes TomTom POI files, OziExplorer waypoint files, and GPX files to load into GPXSonar to view the full geocache pages when I'm out. These all get copied over to the Pocket PC and I'm ready to go. As a bonus, my own free utility OS GPS Convertor (note that at the time of writing the server it's hosted on is down) lets me quickly enter any coordinates worldwide on the fly and navigate to them in TomTom or Ozi - very handy for multis, parking locations that aren't the actual cache coordinates, etc.
There are similar programs for PDAs as for Pocket PCs - you'll get lots of helpful advice if you use the software forum at Groundspeak.

thanks for the info. i do read the groundspeak forums religiously. unfortunately, there is no GSAK for a Mac user. i use GeoNiche for the Palm and its little Java script to convert the loc files to .bmp files. but i'd like to get the points to show as POIs in TomTom _________________ long time Mac user & devotee, Palm TREO 650, TomTom Navigator |

will your OS GPS Converter run on a Mac? If not, do you know of something that will that does what you describe? _________________ long time Mac user & devotee, Palm TREO 650, TomTom Navigator |

Hi there
My utility runs on the Pocket PC - it lets you move a POI around to any lat/long position, then in TomTom you navigate to that POI. Or you can set up an Itinerary file of positions. It's written primarily to help us on this side of the pond to use our British / Irish grid systems with GPS, but you can enter any position worldwide if you do so as a lat/long.
I don't have a Mac so don't know of any software for it, I'm afraid.

I assume you've already found this page: Geocaching using a Mac. It mentions several tools that might do what you want. _________________ Barry Davies
