Can someone let me know if Tom Tom 5 mobile allows off road routing. By that I mean: A) Enter a Northing and Westing, completely disregard roads and point me in the direction I need to walk telling me how far away my destination is. B) Combine on and off road routing by entering a Northing and Westing (destination many miles away) and let it calculate the optimal road journey to an offroad destination. This is available in Garmin kit and would be useful for my geocaching hobby. Failing the above, is there some free / cheap software that runs on the phone and will use the Tom Tom GPS receiver to perform the off road navigation. Thanks in advance :o)

No. Have a look at Mapopolis - there you have a rudimentary offroading feature (heading/bearing/distance)

Yes but it's very basic. If you set your location on a map then set the compass to show the distance to the location then the compass should point towards your destination. It will still frantically try to route you onto roads however.

I bought this software for a few quid. It works well with my bt bluetooth and is great for walking so I'm sure you could use it off road.

When you say it's good for walking do you mean following it's road directions on foot or following a compass heading (or similar) to a destination that is no where near a road...? Thanks for the response.

it will draw your trackline in yellow, you can superimpose this onto an OS map, but you will need to download the map first.
You can also use it as a direction finder.

An excellent tip for "as the crow flies" distance. Thanks.
