Hi, I bought an SD-502 GPS receiver on 20 Jan 2006. The GPS worked on my HP IPAQ rz1710 (Windows Mobile 2003 SE) until few days ago with TT 5. Now I have this problem:

The GPS is recognized by the PCC , led is ON, COM port assigned to COM 4 and when GPS signal is available the led will normally blink, but no data are exchanged between GPS and navigation program. The same happen using the included GPS Info utility. Probably the communication part of the SDIO GPS card is fault. I tested with all versions of the driver including the last one Version 1.33.

Another question is: What is the SPP Modem program installed togheter with GPS Info?

Thanks.

You won't see a directory called Storage Card, only if you have an SD card installed.
The SD-502 device driver will create a new one called GPSDisk Card.
If it doesn't do this then your device is incompatible.
I would suggest you return it and perhaps exchange it for a BT GPS unit.

Hi, have you got the 502 working with your XDA? Does yours work with a card reader?

The SD-502 can not be used with a card reader, whilst the device can be seen it can not be read or written to as an additional driver is required that Globalsat haven't produced as yet.

Right. I think I'm getting there. :D. I borrowed an earlier version of the XDAII from a work colleague, installed gps info and the lastest driver. I can see all the satellites ingps info but can't get TomTom5 to open the right port. gps info says it should be comm 4. Any ideas anyone?

I still can't get TomTom (v5.21) to open. It can't find the map.
I can see the map using file explorer but that's as far as I get with it.
I think i might sell it on ebay Sad

After 3 SD502 units and 2 rz1710s I have to conclude that they are not compatible.

I have tried all permutations of PDA, SD-502 and drivers (1.32 & 1.33)
together with various installation steps (1.32 driver then 1.33 then GPSInfo then soft reset / 1.33 driver then soft reset then GPSInfo then soft reset etc.)
None of the combinations were successful, each test was carried out after a hard reset (there's no other sw on the device ).

The card is not recognised in any of the tests.

From what I am reading, even if they do work together then the reliability of the memeory card is somewhat suspect...

Hallo. I had an SD-502 GPS unit working with my HP RZ1710. After some time the gps part of the card stopped working but I can still access the memory. The seller (SEMSONS.COM) send me another unit but at this time I can't recognize the card (no memory and gps recognized by the PDA). I tested the card on another pda, not HP and is working. I think that some changes have been done on the firmware of the card and now is not working anymore with the hp rz1710. Could you please help me ? Thanks.

These SD-502 can be quite problematic with various PDA's. My first one worked perfectly for the first couple of months, until the SD part of the device decided to open up along the seam. That was replaced with a new unit, which although it installed correctly, the GPSDisk card could be seen, TomTom and my POI's copied over correctly, I could not get a GPS data stream even though the green led was flashing and it was using the same com port 7 that the previous one worked on.
In the end it to was returned and exchanged for a GlobalSat BT-338.
The other problem with the first device was that reading and writing data to the GPSDisK card was very slow in comparison to my original Panasonic SD Card even though they both had identical amounts of data.

Also as an addition with the SD-502 it was necessary to revert back to the TomTom GPS driver V.206 from the V.307

I would be grateful for the latest on the compatibility/success stories of the GlobalSat SD-502 and O2 Xda IIi.

I have got it working on Xda IIs ROM 1.40.00 WWE, ExtROM 1.40.237 WWE using the 1.33 driver. GPSInfo sees port COM7 and GPSDisk Card is operational. Memory Map 5 is happy too.

The O2 Xda IIi should be a similar device. I have first tried on a new unit prior to the latest firmware upgrade, so currently ROM 1.11.0 WWE and ExtROM 1.11.169 WWE. I have tried both 1.32 and 1.33 drivers. I have also tested on the latest firmware - ROM 1.11.0 WWE and ExtROM 1.11.171 WWE with the same result. While the card gets a fix (flashes LED), it is not visible as a GPSDisk Card. I would guess part of the same problem is that GPSInfo on the unit does not see ports COM7 and COM8. Soft resets after the card is inserted do not help.

I expect that if GPSInfo could communicate with COM7 it would herald everything else falling into place. Ditto for being able to see the GPSDisk. Does anybody know about how to work with the COM ports? Is the phone manipulating its COM ports in a way which hinder the GPS driver?

Cheers,
Ondrej

By the simple fact that when you install the SD-502 software you have no visible GPSDisk card indicates an incompatibility problem. Why I have no idea but without the GPSDisk card which is the SD-502's equivalent to the standard SD Card you have nowhere to install and load the maps for TomTom.
The only other option I can offer is to give Matt a call at Easy Devices and see if they have tried it on an XDAIIi
