Lost Shortcuts

Just had the weirdest of problems. I lost the use of the short cut buttons on my IPAQ 5450, it came up with cannot open program. When I looked I had lost all the shortcuts from the start up menu, as well as from the buttons. If I went into system/buttons to re-assign them, the link was also missing from the find file menu, so I could not re-assign them. I ended up doing a restore from a previous back up to get up and running again. Any ideas, so if it happens again I will be better prepared.
