RAC TRAFFICMASTER TELEMATICS IS AWARDED CONTRACT BY NAVIGON

The UK’s leading real-time traffic information provider, RAC Trafficmaster Telematics (RTT) has just won a contract to supply NAVIGON Europe’s leading supplier of navigation software, with its Radio Data System Traffic Message Channel (RDS TMC) service.

NAVIGON delivers its navigation software to a number of UK premium brand satellite navigation manufacturers and will also incorporate the RDS TMC service within its own branded navigation products such as Mobile Navigator|5 (MN|5).

Users of these satellite navigation products will benefit from RTT’s unsurpassed traffic information that offers the UK’s only real-time traffic speed flow data. This information is essential for the navigation systems to provide accurate routing around traffic delays and to ensure that users plan their journeys better.

Traffic data is collated from over 7,500 roadside sensors established across the UK. The information is then disseminated through agreements held with GCap Media and Chrysalis Radio and transmitted within the RDS bandwidth of their commercial radio station broadcasts.

Andreas Westhoff, Director Sales Mobility at NAVIGON, comments: "NAVIGON is the leading choice for consumers due to its sophisticated satellite navigation software. The RTT RDS TMC data provides second to none traffic information which will help our customers save time and put the fun back into driving on today's busy roads."

Tony Eales, Chief Executive of Trafficmaster Plc, concludes: "We’re delighted to welcome NAVIGON to our RDS TMC customer portfolio. Our RTT traffic service will certainly add value to NAVIGON’s software based products and enable them to provide a very competitive offering."

End:

ABOUT RAC TRAFFICMASTER TELEMATICS (RTT)

RAC Trafficmaster Telematics is a joint partnership between Trafficmaster PLC and RAC. The national RDS TMC service offered by RTT is unique in that it gathers traffic data in real time from Trafficmaster’s established network of over 7,500 roadside nationwide sensors. This is then supplemented with incidental data from the RAC.

Data is provided to original equipment manufacturers (OEMs) or direct to automotive manufacturers.

Trafficmaster’s traffic information is derived from its unique state-of-the-art network of nationwide static roadside sensors and transmitters that gather and distribute traffic data from over 8,000 miles of motorway and trunk routes. Traffic data is then delivered to the customer through a number of screen or speech-based receivers. These include a variety of in-car products and services that include its satellite navigation - Smartnav, Trafficmaster Monitor, YQ², Oracle and Freeway units. Traffic information can also be obtained by phoning the 1740 service, which is run in partnership with the RAC and the UK’s main mobile phone operators.

Hi ccsnet,

Well spotted! Thumbs Up

All we need now is for TomTom to do the same for the UK and team up with Trafficmaster for their live traffic data, and also for some of the GPS Receiver manufactures to bring out a combined Bluetooth SiRF III GPS and TMC Receiver.

Regards,

I've seen the device going for about £180 ... do a google on Roadiator..... plus I bet it will face the same problems as the current TMC... ie GNS cos over here in the UK they are about to change the way its charged for.

One point... and they did not answer me... most TMC receivers use the GNS protacol... if you read the same print you will see that Royaltec have also done their own ..... but... whether its compatible is an intresting question because Destinator PN 5 apartently is... but you see not mention of any thing specific on their site.

Since there are two TMC providers (itisholdings.co.uk and RAC Trafficmaster Telematics) and they use different FM frequencies will existing FM RDS TMC tuners work or will new tuners be required?

Is TMC data broadcast in a standard format irrespective of country and provider or will Navigon's Mobile Navigator 5 require modification to make use of the RAC TMC service?

Since the RAC/Navigon agreement is for three years
http://investing.reuters.co.uk/Stocks/QuoteCompanyNewsArticle.aspx?view=PR&symbol=TFC.L&storyID=71042+20-Sep-2005+RNS

"We are pleased to add to these relationships by announcing a new three year traffic information agreement with NAVIGON GmbH for our RDS TMC services which are supplied by RAC Trafficmaster Telematics Ltd."

What happens after three years?

Basically, when can we expect to use this service? What additional kit (if any) is needed beyond that already available? Can we buy into it with confidence that it won't die after three years? (Is there a precedent with Mobile Navigator 4 and itisholdings TMC service?)
