Assisted Satellite Navigation (ASN)

Hi there

I am getting either TomTom go 300 or 500 this Friday, but could someone please answer my question

Is the Assisted Satellite Navigation (ASN) on the Tom Tom 500 any good? Is it reliable? And is it worth getting the 500 rather the 300.

I have a 500 and have noticed when the ASN is in use that it is not that reliable. If this is your only reason for buying a 500 over the 300, you may be better off getting a 300 and spend the extra cash on an external antenna.

I would suggest that it depends on what your expectations are for ASN. I have a 700 and it kicks in whenever I go under the tunnel on the M25 that goes under the M11 about 2 miles from Waltham Abbey and for that short distances it seems to work

It will only work for about 3 - 4 minutes, and I think its really meant for those times that tall buliding may block a signal not for going into tunnels under the Alps.

Aas per tomtom sales leaflets asn is for loss of signals from tall buldings and tunnels .alps or not

mine said i was going 168 mph with asn the other week Laughing Out Loud

In Holland I travel through a number of tunnels, including the Benelux tunnel which is deep and about 1Km long. ASN kicks in and does a pretty good job of keeping track. However, the accuracy of the ASN is poor, and it thinks you are travelling much faster than you actually are - and you can be reported as out of position.

This means that whilst in the tunnel, Jane is already re-computing your route to get you back on track! Having sais that, a bit of common sense and patience works wonders - and within 200 yards of exiting the tunnel all is well again.

So, ASN certainly does work, but it is by no means accurate. It's a guide only.

Does anybody know; when I first got the 700 the "ASN" symbol would appear now and again on the screen. Now I never see that, the other day I was in a long tunnel and the display went gray and my position was accurately updated but no "ASN" symbol.
Yes I have ASN enabled but where has my symbol gone??

I would say that if you are considering the 300 and 500, it all depends on what you want to pay. If you are willing to shell out the extra money, then it's worth it. If you don't want to spend extra, then the 300 is the way to go.
