If PC World can't (or won't) get that simple first law of retailing into their thick skulls they deserve every criticism they get and if you don't agree, so do you!

If the guys are standing around-then by all mean your statement is correct. but if you were to attend to the J9 store you wouldnt be standing for long- out managers have trained the staff to a high level in approching customer asap.

btw im a technician , not sales. 8)

The whole Dixon group is unfortunately proof of the saying 'you can fool most of the people most of the time'. I was forced by need to go to my local PCW once to get an Epson cartridge one weekend, and whilst I expected to pay for the privilege of getting one on a Sunday, I ended up paying OVER Epsom RRP at a 'discount' store.
In any business, you charge what the market will stand, and Dixons is proof that 'Rip off Britain' is in the main the fault of the British Public. Not enough people will take the trouble to investigate their proposed purchase in advance, and that applies to commercial buyers in all fields, as well as individual private buyers.

I have a cheap all-in-one printer, photocopier and scanner and because it was cheap, the replacement colour and black ink cartridges are very expensive.

We have an independent computer shop in the village where I live which, for most things, is cheaper than the average chain store. Especially since we know the man who owns it and can occasionally wangle a discount from him! ;-)

However, the last time we went there to try and buy a replacement cartridge for my printer/copier/scanner, the price had gone up considerably - enough for us to want to look for it elsewhere at a cheaper price! Confused

We took a hesitant trip to our nearest PC World only to walk out with the exact same cartridge that we would have bought at our independent PC shop, only about £5.00 less in price! 8O

Although our local PC World isn't very conveniently located and is quite difficult to get to at busy times, it was worth our while going there on this occasion and we will probably be returning next time I need a new cartridge. The shop is fine as long as you know exactly what you want, can walk right up to it and purchase it without needing to know anymore about it and the price has been proved lower than any other retailer.

Otherwise, like the majority of other people, I like to steer clear of it for major purchases requiring a bit more consideration and money!

Regards,

Bo Peep.

You have one hour to complete the test. Smile

The problem with PC-World is that if you are any good, you won't want to work there. Therefore, the only people who work there are those that can't get jobs at other computer companies. This may be because they aren't old enough yet and they might get there eventually. Ditto the staff working in Dixons, they never know anything about their products, but if you go into a specialist, independant hifi or home entertainment you will get excellent advice and service.

This is precisely the same reason why you don't get qualified chef's working at McDonalds.

The ability to go in view what they have on display, have a play without being disturbed by staff, compare the various models, then go home and order what you want from another retailer on line.

Agreed - it only goes "Pete Tong" when you try and buy something or ask a question.

Actually I did purchase a bargain at the PC World in Notts a few days ago....

A genuine Epson Printer cartridge for 97p each, so I got 2 Laughing

On the downside, I walked past the PDA section on the way out where a sales guy was telling a customer that all the PDA's had Windows 2003 and would run any software that is on his home PC.

Oh and I asked if they stock SDIO WiFi cards (I wanted a touchy feely) and another sales guy directed me to the camera section. Laughing Out Loud.

If you all hate PC World so much, then why do you even bother visiting their stores or buying from them? Then you come home and moan about them on a website. What fun lives you must lead! Sounds like one of those "Yawn" Forums that NOBODY moans about, because there is more to life.

Don't hate them, don't hate anybody. Life's too short. I'm very grateful to PCW for providing me a free showroom of things I mostly don't want but like to look at and a few things I want to buy but prefer to buy from somewhere that offers a good buying experience. It's not only PCW that provide me with this service, there's lots of others in all sorts of retail arenas. Believe me, I'm very grateful.
PCW have done their research and probably done it well. They target particular demographics of the population and provide that group of people with what they want. It's just that I'm not in PCW's target group. Nor, I suspect, are most people regularly active in this forum. But that's for them to declare, not me.
This is a useful forum. I've read comments on anything and everything GPS for a time now, filtered out the stuff I don't want and used the stuff I do want to research the piece of kit most approporiate to my needs and a short list of recommended retailers. Having purchased a product I use the forum to exchange meaningful data with others who have valuable hands on experience of the same product. No guesswork and no bullshit. Just data, information and knowledge. It saves all that tedious stumbling around in the dark and and frees up valuable time for having fun and enjoying life.

Thank you for your opinions.
