Ireland & Channel Islands maps for TomTom

I asked a chap on the Tele Atlas stand, at the PocketGPSWorld GPS Event in Basingstoke (Saturday 26th November 2005) when Tele Atlas were hoping to map the Channel Islands. He replied "next year".

As next year could be any time between January 2006 and December 2006, I am extremely disappointed, as I first asked Tele Atlas this question in an email on 13 June 2003 (please see the previous posts in this thread) and at that time they were hoping to have done all of the Channel Islands by the end of December 2003. I.e. three years earlier!

Bearing in mind that once Tele Atlas have compiled the data, the SatNav companies that use their data then have to manipulate it to be compatible with their own software. That process can take a further three months (or more). Then you have to wait for the map data to be released – all in all you may have to wait an additional year for the data to appear in a SatNav package.

What makes this even more upsetting (as far as I’m concerned) is that Navteq, which is the main competitor of Tele Atlas, has already mapped the Channel Islands several years ago. So if you have a SatNav package that uses Navteq map data (e.g. CoPilot or Mapopolis) then you’re OK.
