tomtom no longer supply the gps cradle, which is really too bad.

dave, don't you think it would be nice to have a note in the original review about this?

I've been looking at building my own cradle, just haven't got around to it yet. I was planning on using standard spring loaded PCB test probes in a custom made frame.

As an aside I discovered that inside the GPS the little cradle contacts are mounted to the main PCB via a 6 pin 1.5mm pitch header....

It appears that along with power this header also carries the wired serial interface to the GPS ;-)

The cradle connector pad PCB can be readily removed from the unit leaving a neat little hole with the 6 pin header visible. For those people who are not concerned with the quick release cradle mounting this would be a very easy and reliable method of connecting the GPS to 5v Power (use a good quality 5v mobile phone charger adaptor) for semi permanent instalation in the vehicle.

Note: If the TomTom BT gps unit is powered from the rear connector it starts up immediateley power is applied and returns to standbuy when it is removed, so there is no need to switch the GPS on or off manually \o/

Dave - Thanks for that. How did you get on with your custom conector? I have been looking at permanent mounting in the rear of the car but have been held back by the need to physically turn the device on!

Do you have a pinout so I can solder on a power lead? Or did the docking station of the reviewed original cater for this? Are the docking stations available anywhere to save butchering the unit?

Regards

Andy
