In today's Sunday Times is a front page story covering the trial results for a GPS-based system to automatically limit your car's speed to the road speed limit. (It's part of the Dept for Transport's Intelligent Speed Adaptation research programme.)

Forget cameras - spy device will cut drivers’ speed by satellite
IT IS the ultimate back seat driver. Motorists face having their cars fitted with a “spy” device that stops speeding.
The satellite-based system will monitor the speed limit and apply the brakes or cut out the accelerator if the driver tries to exceed it. A government-funded trial has concluded that the scheme promotes safer driving.

Big brother issues aside, I find this rather alarming, given my experience of mapping problems and GPS fix accuracy. What will it do if the map doesn't have your road on it - will you be limited to tractor speed as you drive down new stretches of motorway that are still green fields on the map? Or more realistically (and more scary), what happens if you're driving in a stream of cars all doing 60 on a dual carriageway, when your GPS position goes off a little and snaps you across to the 30-limit local road running parallel - and the on-board computer hits the brakes accordingly?
Or am I being pessimistic - will it force the DfT to invest in some accurate mapping, from which we can all then benefit?
