RFDesign writes:

"To further strengthen its position in the GPS market, SiRF Technology Holdings, Inc., leading provider of GPS-enabled location technology, announced that it has acquired Motorola, Inc.'s GPS chipset product lines. As part of the agreement, SiRF also has become a preferred GPS technology supplier to Motorola. "

Does this mean we will soon see SiRFstar III receivers in all Motorola phones?

Motorola and sirf are already tied togther. My motorola A1000 already has a sirf star 2 e/LP chipset in it, as did my motorola A920 before it, so I would have imagined that the next generation of motoral PDA phones would have had a sirf 3 chipsets, even if this deal had not have happened !!!

I severely doubt all phones. The gps chipset and antenna take up a lot of space and a huge amount of power. Most people would not want a GPS in their phone.

More likely, they will bring out one or two phones with this functionality for people who really need it on a daily basis.

Personally I like my phone to be very small and light so I can keep it on my belt permanently.

I'm gussing that this could easily make a phone 20-30% bigger (judging by the size of the phones that already exist which have gps)

The introduction of AGPS has drastically reduced the size and power requirements. Take the new HP Messenger (iPAQ 6500) - if you don't read the manual you wouldn't know it has a GPS antenna.

The receiver doesn't need to be powered up permanently either since the TTFF is reduced by the AGPS
