TomTom 2 & Maps of WE

I saw a post in one of the other forums asking about the Western European Maps. So I thought I would post My experiences, limited though they are.



'Western European Maps' is a new product from Tom Tom and as such is not subject to the special upgrade price that was offered to Tom Tom 1 users. This offer only applies to individual maps (Countries). If you require the WE maps you will have to purchase these at full retail price.

To use the maps you must have Tom Tom 2 software installed and the only way to get this is to buy the map and software for an individual country, then the WE maps will work.



As everyone knows Tom Tom 2 requires activation on the web. The same applies to the WE Maps. But you only need to do this once for Tom Tom Navigator and once for the WE Maps, not for each map.



The maps are not connected i.e. it will not navigate from one country map to another (unless these are on the same map).



I hope this helps anyone considering whether to upgrade to a couple of countries or go for the whole of Western Europe.



One last point.

I personally don't consider the upgrade from Tom Tom 1 to Tom Tom 2 is worth the extra cost. I would have been satisfied with the opportunity to upgrade map information only, as of course this changes with time. Would it not be reasonable to expect the companies who sell navigation software to offer an upgrade in map information to existing users rather than having to upgrade the software as well.

The Western European Maps are much better detailed, with areas that had no roads showing in Tom Tom 1 now being positively overun by them.



My main reason for upgrading was not the software but the latest map information.
