You could try just doubling the yards figure. This would give you a little extra warning time. This would give you about 25 secs warning rather than 20 secs.

Thanks Oldboy. I was going to give that a try but in thinking about it it seemed that that wouldn't work (assuming I understand you correctly). As 50 km/h is about 30 mph, doubling the yard distance for 50 kph (500 yds using Darren's 10 times the speed formula) would give me a warning distance of 1000 metres (1093 yards) for a speed of about 30 miles per hour. This seem like too much warning.

So I found a metric conversion site on the internet (wonderful thing, the internet) and calculated the distances based on the ten times number that Darren recommended. This is what I came up with:

kph /warning dist (m)
20 /113
30 /170
40 /227
50 /283
60 /340
70 /397
80 /454
90 /510
100 /567
110 /624
120 /680
130 /737

If I have not thought this out correctly could someone please let me know?

Thanks

second time around for me - dumped my BMW satnav and bought a tom tom. Quick question if I may and apologies if its been covered:

for the tom tom 530, whats the practical difference between the basic camera list and the zoned? Is it just the sound file that'll play?

If I'm happy that I'm aware of the speed limit on the current road, and therefore only a simple beep or standard warningwould be ok, is the single POI file enough?

Or does the zoned file include additional information about the speed that the tom tom takes into account - eg only playing the warning if you are over the speed limit?

The Single File won't alert you to which Camera you might be approaching.

The Consolidated will inform you of the Type of Camera to expect, but not the Speed that it will be detecting at.

The Speed Zoned Files will tell you the Type, and the Speed Detection, of the approaching Camera.

TomTom Devices don't have the ability to warn you, if you are exceeding the limit that is shown at that location.

Avoid single file, it's a fallback option for older devices as it does not differentiate between camera types so a single icon for ALL cameras.

Consolidated by type or SpeedZoned both ID each camera by type but Speed Zoned adds speed information for each camera.

The TT 720 does actually warn you when you are over the speed limit on a known stretch of road.
If you go about 5 or 6 mph over the limit, your speed indicator flashes with a RED background. Obviously, for roads that do not have a known limit, the warning is disabled.

Yes, but Oldboy was referring to how some other brands look at the actual speed camera data to find the speed limit and only sound the warning if the actual speed is higher.
The TomTom cannot do that.

And it's road speed data is improving with each map release but is still nowhere near comprehensive.

And here was me thinking that TomTom was the only proper satnav.
Oh well, you live and learn. Wink

ukkid76 - I'd use the Garmin POILoader - Consolidated Database

There is a guide for installing the database here

Another guide on installing the UK and Europe Database together is here

The only problem with using the 'built in' speed limits, is that they cover mostly main roads, and are very unreliable for accuracy. I`ve been driving along the A1 up here in Newcastle and some parts flash up that the limit is 60mph but it is infact still a 70mph zone. For this reason, my tt go520 is set to only display the speed that i am travelling at.

Having said that, with navcore 8 out for a lot of devices, the road speed can be corrected and shared with other mapshare users. Which does help a bit!
