Yesterday I bought an iPaq 3970 with a NavMan 3400 GPS. After installing SmartST Pro and a map (Netherlands) I went out to test the GPS. I got a lock and it was correct.

After that I installed SP1, and tried it again. But I can't get a lock anymore. Same problem as other forum guests. But next to that my iPaq locks up. The screen slowly fades until nothing can be seen anymore. The handheld can't be turned on/off. Only soft reset is possible.

So I removed SmartSt, and installed it again without SP1. I got one succesful position via GPS. After that, each time I start SmartST, the handheld locks up after one or two minutes of operation. It seems that if I use external power, the problem does not occur.

Does anybody have an idea what can be wrong here?

Another question: How do I perform a hard reset of my handheld?

Thanks for your help.

It's a function of SmartST Pro that if you don't press a button after starting the programme, it will shut down the iPAQ after two minutes. Also, check in your settings/battery menu to see if the iPAQ is set to power down after x minutes when using the battery. I think this is typically set to two or three minutes. Hope this helps.

Hi Tim,

thanks for your reply.

However, the iPaq doesn't shutdown, but it 'hangs'. I can still see some items on the screen, but they slowly fade away. Turning the iPaqc on or off isn't possible

OK, you say that it only appears to happen on battery power, not external. Could it be that your battery isn't charging? I had to have the battery on my 3850 replaced after only 3 or so months due to this, but it worked fine on external power. I'd see if the battery is charging/holding its charge...

Sorry, forgot to add this iPAQ instruction on ow to perform a hard reset.

Hold down the two outer application buttons and press the reset button for 5 seconds. The screen will fade and the unit will now be in ‘ship mode’. The Full Reset disconnects the battery. All data on the iPAQ Pocket PC will be erased except data stored in IPSM. Data backed up in Permanent PIM will still be intact. You must apply AC power to re-activate the battery.

Hi Tim.

I performed a hard reset and installed SmartST again. Now everything works fine. I even installed SP1, and still find satelites.

So, thanks for your help.

Greetings

Patrick

PS The screen during the hard reset looks exactly the same as I described in my original post.
