I am new to this GPS game and I am looking for something slightly different to the primary purpose of routing software; I am not looking for directions that get me to an intended destination.

What I am looking for is a product that will guide, or direct, me along a route that I have chosen, according to my own criteria; e.g. fun roads to drive, interesting views. By product I mean hardware/software combination.

I will need to be able to define the route using the GPS product alone (I donít want to have to carry a laptop around with me) and I want to do it using a map interface with the ability to point to where I want to go / the roads I want to drive. If I leave my route I want the product to guide me back to my route so that I can continue it. I want to be able define routes, save them and recall them for use later. I might like the option to be able to define routes on a PC/Laptop and be able to transfer them to the product, thus taking advantage of the larger screen.

I have recently used a Palm T3 with the Tom Tom V4 software, I found this to be easy to use and the maps/instructions easy to follow. Unfortunately there was no way of telling it where I wanted to go or of influencing its choice of roads, apart from a single via point.

I welcome the advice and wisdom of the members of this forum in helping me select the product that will do this for me, with the added advantage of guiding me to an intended destination on occasions. Smile

Thanks,

Ian

POIs may provide information on your 'interesting' places.

There's various products that allow more than one via point. TomTom Navigator 3 on the Pocket PC is one - though be aware that the next Pocket PC version is likely to be based on the software you saw on the Palm (here's hoping that TomTom add in various 'missing' features from the existing Navigator 3 product before release).

Really, anything that has the ability to use POI files (to find your 'interesting' places), and has some kind of itinerary feature should do the trick.

Hello Ianhb,

As regards navigation software I use Navigon, you may plan as many itineraries as you want, e.g. for holidays. You may save them and use them later for navigation, also at any moment you may add stage points, modify the order of the stages, or display the itinerary on the map. It can be set to stop at any given stage, or continue to the next. If you turn off the unit (sleep mode) and turn it back on say after viewing that lake you just stopped at, it continues without any problem from where you left off.

So I would say that it very flexible, this is used on a Medion MD95000 (Mitac Mio 168 re-brand).

Regards

Thanks for the comments so far.

One little issue with TomTom 3 is that if you stray off the designated route, the software recalculates to take you directly to you destination and not back onto your route. The setting of waypoints looks a little fiddly, having watched someone doing it - maybe there's a knack to doing them in the right order!

Is it possible to set road type preferences or speeds in TT3, I couldn't do this in TT4?

Navigon sounds interesting, is it only available on this hardware or can I buy the software only?

TomTom Navigator 3 shouldn't ignore points on an Itinerary - though if it recalculates, it will calculate the quickest route for the current destination or itinerary, ignoring any avoids, alternative routes or 'shortest route' settings.

Navigon is available 'software only'.
