Some refer to a "Plus" model of TomTom, which is preloaded. The cost difference appears to be in the $250 range based on the manufacturer's website: http://tomtom.com

I'm wondering whether that cost variance is worth it (?)

You need to be more specific. Do you have a direct URL to the "Plus" offering?

I think what TxFan means is that if you go to http//tomtom.com ,click on "Change Language" and change it to "USA English" you enter the US site version. Click on the TTGo section and there are two alternatives a TTGo with (plus) ready loaded maps at $999 and a TTGo unloaded (perhaps minus?) at $799. If you then click on "Stores" and the "Online Stores" try "Mobileplanet" and it lists a TTGo at $799.95 and a TTGo Plus (maps preloaded) at $999.95. What use a TTGo (minus) with no maps would be in the USA I have no idea. I am one of the people waiting for the USA maps to be released seperately, so that I can use the TTG in the states.

I think the Plus package has the 1 GB SD card included, while the other package may come with a smaller or no SD card. But both MUST come with maps on CD anyhow.

I would guess you can get a 1 GB SD card cheaper than USD200 elsewhere.

That's exactly what I meant. 8)

In the U.S., there are two versions - one preloaded with the maps. My question is whether it is worth the added cost to get maps preloaded or not? Seems if it's easy enough to load them yourself (especially if one buys a higher capacity SD card), it would save money and the unit would provide the same level of detail.

it's a question of personal taste and skill. Loading the maps onto SD card will take you a good two hours. Add the cost of the SD card (90 USD) and see if that comes you cheaper than the hefty 200 USD uplift.

If you are technical enough go with the cheaper package. If you want a worryfree package you may want to go for the overpriced offer.

Carlw, Lutz could well be right. I loaded the western Europe maps the whole lot, and by the time the were extracted and put onto the cards it took about 35mins. I can imagine the US being a lot bigger.
Has anyone tried it yet?.
