Hi

Have loaded the latest update GATSO=3298, working thru these to add mph figures......I've found 2 cams deleted near to where I live (Hillingdon,Middx) plus an additional cam deleted near to my work place (Marlow,Bucks) - for example GATSO:2316.

Have I downloaded a corrupted file as these cam's still exist?

Pete

No, I don’t think you have a corrupted file because if you did have a corrupted one then no camera sites would show up.

Bo Peep and I have found a camera (#381) in Benson (Oxfordshire) that has been deleted from the latest PGPSW database, even though it still exists.

The PGPSW camera database had a major overhaul for the latest version. This was in order to remove cameras, which no longer exist, and to add cameras, which do exist, but nobody had logged. The data used was taken from the relevant official camera site websites.

Unfortunately the official websites appear to be out of date. If you look at the Thames Valley Safer Roads Partnership web based Camera Search Tool and search for Benson you will find no camera there, yet we know that there is one! I suspect that this is the case for your cameras as well.

The best way to fix this is to send an email with the relevant information of the camera, i.e. longitude and latitude, speed limit, road name and number, and old PGPSW database identification number as well. The email address is:

Cameras [at] PocketGPSWorld [dot] com

Regards,

Out of date, it's out completely in my area. I did a search for camera's where i live, and it's got a camera situated on my front garden, and i live in a cul-de-sac

I think this proves, if you don't put in the correct latitude & longitude co-ordinates, or if people guesstimate the location, then camera's will be sited in the most odd places

When you searched for cameras in your area, and found one in your front garden, did you use just the PGPSW database or did you use your local official camera website?

I agree with you 100% that camera sites need to be recorded accurately. This is why, since the turn of the millennium, Bo Peep and I have visited the locations of over 80 speed cameras in Oxfordshire alone. When it was safe to do so, we stood by the camera to record its location on a hand held GPS unit (Garmin 12XL). When it wasn’t safe to stand by the camera we would capture the location as we drove by it. We have also ventured a little into the neighbouring counties of Oxfordshire. Nowadays we use TTNav and GPSAssist to capture the location of the cameras.

A short while ago, it was just PDA users with TTNav who could use the PGPSW camera database. Now, TomTom users of Navigator (PDA), Palm, GO, and Mobile can all use the database. ALK have recently released versions of CoPilot for PocketPC and SmartPhone that can also use the PGPSW database. This is good news for all of us as it allows a much wider audience to access and use the database. This means that more people will be driving additional miles and hopefully reporting on the cameras, which will benefit all of us.

We aim to have the best database. I believe that if everybody does what they can by reporting on new cameras or incorrect details, then the database will be the best in terms of quality and quantity of the camera locations.

Out of interest, are you located in the Thames Valley area, and thus use the Safer Roads Camera Search Tool? Or are you in another area, and use a different website?

Regards,

I live in Barkham, a little village on the edge of Wokingham, since I know that at least some of the cameras in the database are wrong would it be of any help if I did a tour of the cameras in the area to get correct positions, speeds etc.?

Hi Stuart,

Yes please! Thumbs Up

That would be a great help if you could make a note of cameras and report your findings. Here’s an example of how I report updates to:

Cameras [at] PocketGPSWorld [dot] com

Cameras to delete
None

Cameras to move
GATSO: 5229 30mph A418, Tiddington (Oxfordshire). Should be Long/Lat: -1.06200, 51.74074

Cameras to add
Benson: A4074 50mph Should be Long/Lat -1.11526, 51.62022

Cameras verified: i.e. Speed limits of existing speed cameras that are otherwise correct
GATSO: 2477 30mph Chinnor, B4009 aka Oakley Road
GATSO: 0330 30mph Henley-on-Thames, A4130 aka Northfield End
GATSO: 5185 30mph Henley-on-Thames, Greys Road
GATSO: 2028 30mph Lane End, B482 aka Marlow Road
GATSO: 5192 30mph Nettlebed, A4130
GATSO: 2458 30mph Oxford (Blackbird Leys), B480 aka Watlington Road
GATSO: 2475 30mph Thame, A418 aka Oxford Road
GATSO: 5042 60mph Thame, A418
GATSO: 2476 30mph Thame, Kingsey Road
GATSO: 2470 30mph Wheatley, A40 aka London Road

Whilst the Road number/name aren’t critcal, it does help to confirm the location of the camera.

Regards,

Why not simly do a screen capture when you are by the cameras?
Then when back home simply use something like autoroute to accurately position a pushpin then read off the coordinates?

I did that for 2 cameras in my vicinity and they are accurately positioned.

That’s another good way. Basically which ever way works for you. Thumbs Up

I use GPSAssist and have set a hardware button for capturing cameras. These are then recorded on an .OV2 file for that purpose, i.e. I don’t save new cameras in the PGPSW camera database .OV2 file. I then extract the longitude/latitude coorindates from the file and send in. However I could just as easily send in the new .OV2 file for incorporation into the next version of the database.

I prefer to send as much information about the camera as possible (i.e. nearest town/village, road name/number, and speed limit) so that the manual verification process, as done by the database coordinator, is made as easy as possible.

Regards,

I am sorry to hear that I have removed some valid cameras Embarassed Please email the details in again and I will reinstate them in the next release. If you know the old GATSO number then I will be able to get the coordinates from the previous release.

Now that I am back from a week in the Lake District I will start processing the updates that have come in.

Richard,

We are all grateful for you hard work, and if the odd cam goes missing well not a big problem..........it's good to see the members sending in mph updates (badly needed) as hopefully Checkpoint can then be used to it full potetial.

Are you interested in mobile sites? There's a place near me which is regularly used.

On the subject of mobile cameras in vans, are they used for traffic coming towards them or going away?

The camera van will sit with its rear doors either open, or a hatch open in the window for the camera to see out of ... the vans only record vehicles travelling towards them, although be careful as usually by the time you see the van it is too late !

There's some camera's need amending near here (M180 North Lincs).

Now for a daft question, with hopefully an easy answer! I'm using TT3 on a 2210. I've got one of the buttons set to record present postion so i can log the new camera's postion by pushing it as I pass by. But having then played with TT3 I'm blowed is I can see how I access that data. The only way I seem to be able to use it is in the 'Navigate to' feature, where it just appears as a name. It must be recorded somewhere as a lat/long, can I easily access it and extract somehow?
Thanks

Rod
