locking up !

I am using a navman 4100 bluetooth receiver & an Ipaq 2210 running memory map software.

When it works, it works very well but it is very very tempremental and could never be relied upon as a serious navigation assistant. I always carry maps and compass and always end up using them.

So what is happening. I turn on the 4100 and then open bluetooth manager on the 2210 to "Connect". This always works and the bluetooth link seems to be ok. So I start memory map and it uses port 5 to connect to the incoming data from the 4100. I have this setup as Navman and it sets a baud rate of 52000 that I cannot change.

Opening the sat status and after a while I get the greyed out sats which soon go green and I can lock on to my current position, all is well.

So we go walkies and things go well for a while but then the red position indicator stops and it is no longer got any satelite reception.

I can hear you say " move out into the open " but it is not that the 4100 has lost the sats above.

I can close memory map and reopen but this never works and the bluetooth manager shows the 4100 is still connected.

The only way to get it working again is to push the reset button on the back of my 2210 and start again.

This I usually have to do many times during a 10 mile hike.

Can anybody give any explanations or provide a clue as to what is going wrong. I do not get these problems when using the 4100 and my laptop in a vehicle so I am assuming it's something to do with the ipaq and more than likely that dodgy windows Os.

I believe the problem is with Bluetooth dropouts and the way Memory Map (or Windows) recovers from them. What I think is happening is that as you are hiking the two ends of the Bluetooth path are moving, say screen in hand, receiver on backpack and the path is interrupted by your body. clothing or even a mobile phone and possibly its Bluetooth signal. When this happens the Bluetooth path is interrupted and the Memory Map data transmission fails. The Bluetooth path seems to instantly re-establish but the Memory Map data can take a long time (upto 10 mins).

You can see if this is your problem by taking the equipment into your garden where it can get a clear view of satellites, placing the two units next to each other, get them running and leave them alone. When I do this it works perfectly for as long as I leave it there.

The best way I found (by accident) to avoid this problem was when I had my sunglasses hanging by a neck chord on my chest and I placed the Bluetooth receiver on them. This meant that the BT receiver was in front of me as was the PDA and there were no interruptions. It also never happens in the car where the units are mounted and nothing moves in between.

Whether the problem lies in the Memory Map or the Bluetooth stack I do not know.

That is definately a possibility and as you say the bluetooth soon reconnects which it does but memory map goes awol when it's data stream is interupted.

So given this then the best location for the 4100 would be ontop of a hat on your head then it will always see the ipaq.

Will give this a go.
