I am still trying to decide which navigation software to purchase and ran into a situation this morning that should be perfect for GPS.

Heard on the radio that there was a bad accident that had the interstate I normaly take shut down. I knew approx. where the exit they referred to was but was not 100% if it was before or after I get on the interstate. What software package will best handle this situation? I would like to be able to zoom onto the interstate and see what the exits are, for example can I pick the junction of 2 interstates and then just manually scroll up or down them and see the exit names? I also want to be able to pick a new route before I get too far into my drive to have as many options as possible. I don't want to have to miss turns to try and get the software to reroute me. Also if what options do I have if I don't like the routes that the software picks? I know I can tell it to pick shortest, avoid interstates, etc. But is there anyway to basically reject a route and have the software calculate a new one?

Most of the programs on the market allow you to discard the current route and select an alternative. But not all of them give you the optin to block a particular road. TomTom Navigator does it, it lists all the major roads on your current route, and you can specifically advise the program to avoid one or the other . You will not be able to say where you want to exit - the program will try to find that out by itself. Of course you can also just take the next exit and then tell TomTom not to use the Interstate any more.

Other programs show you the route steps, and there you can reject particular steps in the route, nad the program will recalculate the route based on your avoids. This sounds like you have more control, but it is very difficult to do while driving - better stop somehwere and read through the list... I personally prefer the no-brainer-big-finger approach of TomTom...
