Hello all,

Had the TTG for about two days now, and I must say it is fantastic. Been reading this forum for a bit, but I couldn't seem to find a really easy way of putting your own voice onto the TTG for the directions - or rather, in my case, my seven year old's voice... Imagine it: "Daddy, in 200 yards, you should turn left..." etc.

Now, this uses the infamous VIFTool to work. All the instructions about how to use this tool were in German, and as I don't speak German, and Google's translator wasn't exactly very good, I've just spent all evening trying to suss it out, and I thought I'd send a post so that anyone can add their own son's (or daughter's) voice to the TTG.

To make this work, you're going to need a few downloads first.

The VIFtool can be downloaded from here: http://ghostwheel.de/viftool.zip

You'll also need the ogg file encoders from here:

http://www.vorbis.com/download_win_1.0.1.psp

(You want the Encoders - Vorbis Tools)

Unzip all these files into the same working folder. Its this folder that you're going to need to save all your sound files to aswell.

Now, go into "Sound Recorder" within Windows (this is of course assuming that you're using Windows!!) which you'll usually find in Programs -> Accessories -> Entertainment.

Set up your microphone, and record someone saying "After".

Click on save as, and at the bottom of the save as dialogue box, you'll see the format, make sure this says "PCM 22.050 kHz, 16 Bit, Mono".

Save the file as After.wav (you can just type in "After" into the box, and the programme will add the wav for you).

Do exactly the same for the following. There are 59 of these! You must ensure that the filenames are exactly as written here, although what you actually say doesn't really matter. For example, I think that the prefix "In" is better than "After", so you say "In 300 yards turn left". But you can mess around - I got Jack to say "Now join the motorway - Vroom!"

Here's the list:

After.wav..........."After "
50.wav.............."50"
80.wav.............."80"
100.wav............"100"
200.wav............"200"
300.wav............"300"
400.wav............"400"
500.wav............"500"
600.wav............"600"
700.wav............"700"
800.wav............"800"
Meters.wav........"metres"
Arrive.wav........."you have arrived at your destination"
TurnRight.wav...."Turn right"
2ndLeft.wav........"Take second left "
2ndRight.wav......"Take second right"
3rdLeft.wav........."Take third left"
3rdRight.wav......."Take third right"
AhExit.wav.........."exit ahead "
AhExitLeft.wav....."exit left ahead"
AhExitRight.wav..."exit right ahead"
AhFerry.wav........"take the ferry ahead"
AhKeepLeft.wav..."Ahead Keep left"
AhKeepRight.wav "Ahead keep right "
AhLeftTurn.wav...."Ahead turn left"
AhRightTurn.wav.."Ahead turn right"
AhUTurn.wav......."Make a U turn ahead "
BearLeft.wav......."Bear left "
BearRight.wav....."Bear right"
Charge.wav........"Congestion charge"
Depart.wav........."Depart"
KeepLeft.wav......"Keep left"
KeepRight.wav...."Keep right"
LnLeft.wav.........."Keep to the left "
LnRight.wav........"Keep to the right "
MwEnter.wav...... "Join the motorway "
MwExit.wav........."Take the exit "
MwExitLeft.wav...."Take the exit on the left "
MwExitRight.wav.."Take the exit on the right"
RbBack.wav....... "Go all the way around the roundabout"
RbCross.wav......."Drive straight over the roundabout "
RbExit1.wav........."first exit "
RbExit2.wav........."second exit "
RbExit3.wav........."third exit "
RbExit4.wav........."fourth exit"
RbExit5.wav........."fifth exit "
RbExit6.wav........."sixth exit "
RbLeft.wav..........."At the roundabout, bear left "
RbRight.wav........ "At the roundabout, bear right"
RoadEnd.wav....... "at the end of the road "
SharpLeft.wav......."Turn sharply left "
SharpRight.wav....."Turn sharply right "
Straight.wav........ "Go straight on"
TakeFerry.wav......"Take the ferry "
Then.wav.............."then "
TryUTurn.wav......."If possible, take a U turn."
TurnLeft.wav........."Bear left"
UTurn.wav............"U turn "
Yards.wav............"yards "

Once you've got a folder full of these wav files (this took me and Jack about 30 mins to do, by the way), you might need to edit them to take away pauses at the beginning and end of the sounds. Remember that these are all being pieced together, and it'll sound daft if you have "After..... three hundred.............yards.....turn left". Now, you can do this within Sound Recorder, but it isn't user friendly. Probably best to use some proper sound editing software like GoldWave.

Next, you need to convert them from WAV into OGG files. I didn't know this, but OGG files appear to be the "next" MP3, better quality, and smaller sized files. To convert them, you need to use the OGGENC.EXE which is one of the files you downloaded from Vorbis. Copy this file into the folder with all the WAV files in it. Then highlight all the WAV files, and drag them onto the OGGENC.EXE file (you can do this one at a time if you find it easier). You'll find a black box popping up for a second, then disappearing, and then your folder will also contain 59 OGG files.

The next stage requires you to use the command shell. For those not used to it, it might look daunting, but there isn't much to do here.

To bring up a command shell, go to Start -> "Run...", and type in "CMD" (without quotes) into the box, and click ok.

Up will come a black box. type into the prompt: "CD <your directory>" (without quotes). For <your directory> you need to type in the name of the folder you saved all your files to, for example:

CD C:\TOMTOMGO\WAVEFILES

If you have spaces in the folder names, you will have to put them into quotes, for example:

CD "C:\TOMTOM GO\WAVE FILES"

Once here, type in:

VIFTOOL join 11 PLOPPY FRAM.VIF

You don't have to write the word PLOPPY, any one word would do here. If all goes well, you'll end up with two new files:

DATA11.CHK and FRAM.VIF.

Copy these two files in the normal way to your Tom Tom Go's root directory, and allow it to reboot.

Then change your voice to the French Male Francois, and if all is well, you should have your very own voice!

Sorry its such a long post, but hopefully some people will find it useful!!

All the best,
Mr Ploppy.

Only AFTER posting, does he realise that TomTomTim has done EXACTLY the same thing, and he now goes into a corner to sulk.

<Sorry TomTomTim, didn't mean to take away your glory - I take it all back!>

He loved doing it, but I think he got bored towards the end. He hasn't yet heard the final result yet though - he went to bed.

Sadly enough, at about 9:45pm tonight, I had to get him out of bed to record two that I'd forgotten!

You can report me to Childline now...

It'll be there somewhere, if no error message has come out. Basically when you type in VIFTOOL 11 PLOPPY FRAM.VIF, it WILL create a DATA11.CHK (cos it'll always be DATAxx.CHK depending upon the number you provide, and FRAM.VIF because this is what you've typed in as the third parameter).

The only thing I can think of is that it's in a different folder? Do a search on your computer for DATA11.CHK, maybe you can find it that way. If you're still stuck, please post back and let me know with a list of exactly what you're doing.

Thanks Mr. Ploppy! Followed your instructions and now have a customized voice file. Just one thing ....that last command should read

I have done this a couple of times, but I like to read that you can just "drag the files" onto oggenc.exe to make it convert.

Lo,

I'm having a problem getting this to work. As a test I took the usam.vif and data09.chk and did a

viftool split usam.vif

this gave me the ogg files. I renamed the old vif and chk files and then did a

viftool join 9 test usam.vif

this built the new vif and chk files. I copied these to my TTG and rebooted... When I tried to test the voice all i got was silence...

any ideas?

Thanks

The only thing I can think of is maybe the extraction doesn't work. I'm no expert, but I tried exactly the same thing, but only to get out from the voices exactly what they say. I couldn't actually get a recognisable wav file.

But I do know that my method above works, so the only conclusion is that the "split" doesn't work as well as it should.

I've just read that the viftool uses hard-coded 8O lengths for extracting the oggs. Apparently they are different for non german voices

I noticed a few issues with VIFTOOL and wondered if it was case sensitive. I always use lower case and it seems to work.
