I’ve just taken delivery of an iPaq 4700. Two problems have arisen with MM OS 2004:

The lack of VGA support makes the maps look of poor quality.

Press and hold, of hardware buttons, no longer works to scale in and out. This feature is now included in the OS to increase the number of hardware buttons available, which seems to override MM.

Any word on an update or even, considering the time of year, a 2005 version?

I assume you have set the buttons up in MM under Menu-Overlay-Settings? If you have this seems to be an annoying new setting, maybe it will be handled in a minor update.

Problem with MM is that if there is a MM2005, the Ordnance Survey licence restrictions will mean that you have to buy all new 2005 maps to go with it unless you are prepared to circumvent the terms of the licence with hacks.

There is a way around the VGA issue if you're familiar with Windows development tools. The problem is that the Second Edition of Windows Mobile 2003 will pixel-double any applications that do not specifically say they will work in VGA. This is because most applications look silly if they only take up a quarter of the screen. However Navigator can usefully use the extra pixels.

To make it do so you need to add a new "HI_RES_AWARE" resource to the executable. The details are on the Brighthand forums here:

http://discussion.brighthand.com/showthread.php?s=4fd9a0681e9c6302f0aaf2e2c0dbb2a8&threadid=105601

It's possible even if you're not a developer, but if you are then it's pretty simple. I did it for memory map and the results are great on my Toshiba e800 (running SE). I actually prefered the application when it ran in VGA on the first edition of WM2003 because the toolbars were smaller so more area was used by the map (and there was no need to change the executable).

One minor point is that the scale rectangle is difficult to read because it's too small for the text inside it, but that's insignificant when you see how good VGA looks, showing 4 times the detail. I did send some bitmaps showing this to Pocket GPS months ago, but they never used them. Maybe they could dig them out now that VGA is more common.

I reckon that Memory Map should provide the executable as a download for non-developers. It certainly wouldn't be difficult for them to make the change, and I'm sure that most people would put up with any minor glitches in order to make the most of their VGA screens.

Cheers,
Ian.

I see what you mean, WOW, without the doublepixeling MM look great.

I used this method, it's much easier than using the developers tools:

Thanks for the hint.

Now they just need to fix the scale in and out h/w butons,

Thanks for the pointer to the easier way of handling pixel-doubling.

I see that there's another way of getting apps to use VGA with the release of a new VGA mode app for 2003SE:

http://discussion.brighthand.com/showthread.php?s=&threadid=107944

I like this because it brings back the small taskbars that the original hacks had but SE doesn't. This means that you can get even more of a map on display at once. It's also excellent for other apps, especially Pocket Internet Explorer, which is awesome in landscape mode - it's almost like browsing on a laptop.

Cheers,
Ian.

IanM, I have just loaded the VGA application you linked to and - yes - what a difference with the OS maps at scaled in to the last but one prior to max deffinition the pixelation was a pain but now just pure clariy
- easy to do as well -
:D don't use the OS stuff on the 4700 too much but its nice for the odd walk
- no doubt it will get some serious use once we get into the summer months
- at least since loading the BT GPS fix for tomtom 3 the GPS now works with the OS stuff as well
- getting there but I think it will take some time to sort out what I really want from the PDA

I have just downloaded and installed the 4.40 software on my 4700. The results look like this:

Notice a couple of new icons on the tool bar. You can now hide the toolbar, also there is a quick method to create a mark.
