On a more productive note I may arrange a proper little contest between Polstar, Garmin GPS12 I use for teaching, and my Garmin Vista when I find a minute or fifteen. Any suggestions on tests apart from timing cold start in good conditions and in not so good ones?

Well, I took both devices for a walk today in the lovely Cartmel Park Woods, looking like a mug with a Vista in one hand and the phone and Polstar in the other. I could not possibly hold GPS-12 as well.

Powered them up in perfect conditions: full view of sky, no trees or buildings withing a couple hundred metres. Clear skies too. Vista (last used in Italy last Summer) had a fix after 40 seconds, Polstar (last used in the same location a week earlier) took 3 1/2 minutes. However later Polstar was either lying or really had twice or more times as many satellites at all times. In the woods (leafless at this time of the year) Vista was losing it every couple of minutes and complained all the time about weak signal. Polstar was happily switching between satellites very fast and was receiving 4-8 when Vista saw 0-3. Not bad. Polstar never lost the fix. Except once when I briefly put in it the pocket to help my young son off a rock.

They seem to have a very different tracking tactics. Vista is conservative and tries to stick to what she (?) got tracking, Polstar is 'opportunistic' and grabs what's there.

Interesting experience altogether. Thought I'd share it. The plan was that if Vista is consistently better then I would flog Polstar and get Bluetooth adapter for Vista.

Best wishes,

W.
