Anyone help with this one?

I have an etrex Legend, serial cable came with it and i bought a serial to usb converter ie USB plug one end mail serial the other. I'm running Windows XP with service pack 2. Loaded Garmin trip and waypoint manager( following the instructions NOT to connect up until it was fully loaded). Plugged in the Gps and apparently its not recognising it.
There a auto detect diagnostic facility in the Garmin waypoint manager cant find the etrex
gps connected, gps is on and interface option set to garmin.

Suggestions fixes please
Thanks Rolling Eyes

Sounds like you have not installed the USB>serial driver on your PC.

The driver should have been supplied with the USB>serial converter (with instruction). You install the driver which gives you a com port and that is what you use.

Starting to make a bit of sense with this thanks to advice so far!

No I didn't actually install any adapters, wondered if window XP would do that if it detected my plugging it in? apparently not.
I've been looking through the paperwork and there is a mention of a link titled Serial to usb converter http://tech.prolific.com.tw/visitor/fcabdl.asp?fid=27879636 when I go to the page it says access denied??? however in the download section which you can get into theres, what maybe are drivers, theres that many i'm a little confused.
Is there a generic driver thats compatible for a Serial to usb converter?

Thanks

You need to tell us exactly how your USB>serial converter cable is called before we can point you to the right driver.

Hmmm Thanks for the advice to date. I've had a look at the Serial usb connector there doesn't seem to be any name on it and theres no identifying makers name on the product receipt!!!

I'm going to contact the supplier to see if they can confirm who manufactured it and where the hell the drivers are to be found :x

Not impressed, ie little thought from supplier as to how to obtain drivers!!!!
