I am considering trying to connect the NMEA 0183 output from a marine GPS to a Pocket PC and/or Palm PDA. What I want to do is program the a database on the handheld computer as a fishing log. In this database, I want to record the LAT/LON coordinates from the GPS whenever I store a fish caught" record.

Due to cost of the PDA, I would really prefer to use a Palm OS PDA but from what I have been able to research, it looks like a Pocket PC might be better. What I have not found is a wire pinout for serial input of NMEA signals for a generic GPS input.

I have connected NMEA between many marine electronics products -- VHF, fish finder, radar... but each of these supports a NMEA in and out "port" and are very well documented for interconnection.

Any help or direction would be appreciated. I did search the forum, but didn't find anything that answered my questions.

The answer depends on which Pocket PC you are planning to go for. For starters, most of the modern PDA's come WITHOUT serial port, so you will have to go with a more ancient model.

For those the connector pinout is well documented, and you only need three pins - RxD, TxD, and GND.

I wouldn't be quite as negative as Lutz about serial ports in modern machines, but it is important to check, as some modern Pocket PCs do not have a serial port.

I believe all the latest batch of iPAQs have a serial port, but I may be wrong with the iPAQ rz1710 (which is very much a budget machine).

You may be able to get a good second hand machine that will do all you need. Something like an iPAQ h3950 or h3970 would potentially be a good choice - for your application, it should be just as capable as an expensive new machine.
