I have just purchased my first Pocket PC / Sat Nav from Aldi which I think is a real bargin, this is in fact the first time I have seen a Sat Nav system in operation.

I have used it a couple of times locally and think it is great. :D

My second 'good find' is this forum. :D :D

As a complete 'newby' to Sat Nav I have several questions which I will try and solve looking through the previous postings.

I bought the system to help the wife to navigate us through France to Spain which should happen in a few weeks and I was pleased to see the Medion MD95000 offer came with CD's for France & Spain.

I believe I have to 'copy' these disc's onto a Multi Media Card (MMC) this is my first problem.

The instruction book it say's that the pocket PC ONLY supports memory cards in the FAT 16/32 file format.

I have a local store http://www.overclockers.co.uk/ that sells allsorts of computer equipment including memory cards a lot cheaper than Medion, £55 for a 256MB card.

The card types shown on Overlockers site are Compact Flash (CF) and Secure Digital (SD) neither make any mention of FAT 16/32 so which type of card do I go for

I have read on a previous posting on this site that Chinese memory cards can be faulty and that Japanese cards are better,is this the case with both CF & SD cards

I have just telephoned Medion to see if they can advise me, basically their advice is buy their card.

Whilst on the phone to them I also asked about and answer I read on this forum as to the maximum side of memory card to use with this device...the answer on here was 1GB......... the chap at Medion didn't agree with this Rolling Eyes

so who's right

You need an MMC or SD card; an Compact Flash card won't physically fit. You can format the card, so you can choose the FAT.

Can answer about the 1GB limit as I use a 512Mb in my older Medion.

Regarding buying from Medion there are cheaper places I would try Ebuyer.

Medion price for 256Mb is: £55.99

Ebuyer's prices for SD cards are:
256Mb £13.55 upwards, free P&P
512Mb £28.45 free P&P
1Gb £58.75 free P&P but out of stock currently.

And if you need a card reader for your PC, £11.74 free P&P.

OBH6UK is right, you can either buy an MMC or SD card from any supplier, and basically on your PC, you can choose to format the card in FAT32 format, as you would if you were to format a normal floppy disk.

However I don't know if it's better to buy the SD cards or MMC cards, that really depends on which one will give you the most battery life out of your Medion, and what other equipment the cards would be compatible with; eg mobile phones ect.. (if ever u decide to use the cards with another piece of hardware when you replace your medion in years to come...)

Buy SD cards - they are faster in operation than MMC and physically more robust - you can also put a write lock on them (ie prevent accidental erasure)

The Medion is in fact a Mitac Mio 168 re-badged (I have a Navman PIN - just the same).

Whilst you CAN use 1Gb SD cards in these devices it is reccomended for GPS map software you do not exceed 256Mb.
This is because of the large amount of reading of map dat taking place from the SD card.

You can get SD cards that are faster than others - similar to the speeds of CD drives on PC's - they started out as 1x and are now up to 52x the speed of the original drives.
Faster SD cards work at 30x and 40x and with this type of card you could use a 512Mb card in your Medion with GPS map data on it with no problems.

1Gb cards will work with data for other PPC applications - such as Word, Excel, photos, MP3's etc etc with no problem.

Go for the better makes of SD card like : Lexar, Sandisk Extreme, Kingston, Panasonic, Sony etc etc as these tend to be faster.

You can buy a 512MB Kingston SD card from Ebuyer for less than £30 including VAT and delivery. It works fine in the Medion as I have one myself Smile

Best bargain I've found for a long time!
