Very interesting. I bought mine in September and it came with map v314 and App 4.21 out of the box, which I have upgraded to 4.4 and 4.42 as these upgrades have become available. Has anyone managed to get two TTGs next to each other with map v314 and v390 for a little comparison? If there is a substantial difference in the content of these maps I do feel that TomTom should give us the option of a free upgrade; it is very early in the life of this product for the early adopters to be left without the latest maps IMHO.

Maybe i'm being a bit too demanding wanting a free upgrade to a map. After all, if I bought the 2004 paper atlas 2 months before they released the 2005 edition I wouldn't get a free atlas ot of it. It would be helpful, however, to know how and when TomTom plan to issue updates to their TTG mapping data. I presume it will end up being either a subscription or flat fee per update CD. What have they done with their older PDA based systems?

Each year they have updated the PDA software, and included updated maps at that time - ie they have not provided map updates on their own, and you have to buy the whole software / maps again each year (however, you obviously don't need to buy new hardware).

To be fair, the TomTom software sells for around £120, whereas a new CD for a VDO Dayton SatNav unit is more like £199, so it's still good value.

Trouble is , with TTG at the moment, it appears that you don't know if you've bought the 2003 version in a 2004 cover till it's too late.

Anyway, latest story here.

After reading this, I checked my TTG (arrived 2 weeks ago from Amazon). It had the older GB map - so I figured I would install the map from the CD - I first had to remove the other map, but no problem with that. When installing the map from CD it installed it under a different name (can't recall at the moment - but something like Great Britain-Navigator or something) - but it all worked fine - it was the same version number as the old map (314).

What is the difference between this and 390? And how can I get 390?

Whilst there is a user key on the back of my CD, the TTG never asked for it to be entered when I installed the map.

Response from TomTom support:

"Dear Mr Atkinson,

As new products are shipped the map data is updated from time to time.
We are unable to update the existing map data that you have at this time, This is normally done annually.
We are unable to update existing users every few months.
With best regards,

The TomTom Customer Support Team"

Doesn't really tell me much about the differences between the old and new maps, but pretty much confirms that there are newer versions. If i'd have waited a few weeks before getting my TTG I could have had a newer map...........

I received this today from TTG:-

"Thank you for your response.TomTom is an innovative company that always strives to have the latest updates and technology.

We therefore have once a year an Upgrade program where customers of TomTom are offered the chance to buy the latest version plus the maps for a reduced price. All registered TomTom users we will kept informed about future releases and upgrades.

We hope to have answered your question to your satisfaction.
With best regards"

Not necessarily - seems to be the luck of the draw at the moment. That's what's so annoying Evil or Very Mad

Maybe you should be talking to your retailer, for selling 'out of date' goods...

To put things into perspective slightly, the map files are licenced, not produced by TomTom. It is extremely likely that TT would not be allowed to host the files for anyone to download for free (they would pay a licence fee on each unit). This is why the charge for updates and issue them on a CD.

I'm sure the 390's will be replaced by 400 - an then we'll see a CD and a price.

I don't agree that some users should get one thing and some another either, but it's just not theirs to give away.

This is common practice - companies produce revisions of both soaftware and hardware with no obligation to the users already shipped. Just look at my ADSL modem - it's the latest hardware build, but nobody expects Westell to replace all the previous units. It's life .. buy it later, you get a newer release. At least all of us with 314 have been getting TT navigation for the last however-many months, eh?

Good point, and well made.
However your last sentance is wrong.
I have had my TTG 3 weeks and it is V314...so not a number of months...not even one month and it looks like Tom Tom want to charge me so I can have a map that was shipping before I bought mine - it looks like luck of the draw.
Question is, should I ship mine back to amazon and demand a product that isnt out of date?
