Are the files getting bigger these days?

The last 2 or 3 up dates no longer fit on my 2598. It's effectively ''out of the box'' - no music, pics or anything else added to it by me.

I have an old Nuvi 310 and I used to load updates onto my PC and then select mapsets to download onto a memory card. I found with that, when plotting a long route say UK to southern Spain, it would stall before it got to the end, so out of choice I would rather not use a memory card.

In some respects it doesn't matter, I'm getting too old for driving long journeys abroad. I'm just curious.

Map files generally increase in size as new roads are constantly being built.

Long and/or complicated routes can cause issues, solution is to split them into two. Nothing to do with the memory card.

As I posted recently the latest Garmin mapping does seem to have more detail in the popup images when you are approaching a turnoff.

The latest maps do seem to be considerably larger than previous.

There was a time when if the map didn't fit you could select a smaller map. I remember EU not fitting so I selected just UK. Didn't see that option last time.

The option only appears if you don't have sufficient space. Would be nice if you could always select but not how it works unfortunately

You're right Kremmen. As per my post on 14th June you can see the junction view files are getting larger (as are the core road maps, postcode data and POI/Foursquare files) with more details added - I've noticed a few off the M5 have been updated.

I've posted details of main file size changes for the last few years in the relevant 20xx.x0 map release topics for anyone to see how large the latest release is.

I downloaded the update to my PC and then selected maps that I may use until I was up to capacity.

I think I got UK & Ireland, France, Belgium and around the borders of Northern Spain.

It used to take the whole of Western Europe.

I must remember to see if I can redo my 2599 with just UK if it fits without a card.

Wonder what the procedure is now I have a card in it. If I take the card out will it throw a wobbly when GE finds it having no maps.

No, but it should ask for a card or offer to install a smaller regjon

Not sure which device you have but unless this is an old device that's not generally a good idea as the 'map' update is far more than just the map, it also updates junction view files etc.

Just updated my 2599 to just UK&I after removing sdcard.

As it's only my backup device no problem.

It didn't offer an option on my 2589 so I've used a card.

On a previous update I selected the Western Europe option to replace the oversize full Europe update. This latest update states use SD card with no option to use smaller map.

If you know how I can load a smaller map it would be appreciated.

Only reason I can think of why that might happen is that Express didn't put your current map onto your nuvi, or Garmin have changed how Express works.

I took the card out and opened GE

There was a map update option and once selected I g9t a popup saying there was insufficient room.

It showed 2 options.

Insert a card or choose a region.

It's a 2598.

Are you saying then, that it would be better to just insert a card in the device and update to that?

Yes, and allow Express to update the device plus card
