When I go to the play store, I was offered an upgrade to the latest beta. But you have to be a beta tester.

Find it in the appstore.
Scroll down past the Whats New, Rate this app and Developer contact and then there should be an option for 'Join the beta'

I couldn't remember how I found it and obviously didn't scroll down far enough when I looked yesterday (or whenever)

Also, do we know yet where the information goes when submitting cameras? I see the options are only for static and mobile, how would you differentiate specs? I notice there is also an option for reporting road danger and accidents, so does it go to Google/ Waze? I would have dived in deeper, but the Send button stayed greyed out and I didn't want to enforce an accidental submission. Maybe this function isn't fully enabled yet?

My guess is that it works in other countries with their databases, much like the 'update database' probably works flawlessly with other databases.

Maybe in time Leo can get it to update like CA does subject to a valid subscription.

Hi.
The beta version has been promoted to the production release. Will be available on Google Play within hours.

About camera submission and other feedback from the app.

Everything the app sends outside, go to my webserver and accumulated in SQL database. Not a problem to share it, but there are some technical questions like URLs, formats, etc.

Submitted points have their own life time, depending on type. Fixed speed cams have the life time of 10 days, mobile cams - 3 hours. For submitted points the app displays confirmation popup window with 'Like/Dislike' buttons. When a point is confirmed, its life time increases. When a point is disliked, its life time is reduced. Two successive "dislikes" disable submitted point.

When the app starts, it loads submitted, not expired fixed/mobile cams or dangers inside the circle of 30 mi radius. Points in the database are indexed using so called "sphere hierarchical triangular mesh", and the area covered by the triangular cells for the 30 mi circle is somehow larger. That's why it is possible sometimes to see the points submitted from France on the map. Then the app requests the webserver for newly submitted points every 2000 meters, but inside a circle of small radius (2000 meters too) in order to reduce internet traffic. If someone submitted a point minutes ago, another one following him can receive it.

The app allows to submit a point if: a) stable GPS presents; b) the app has moved at least 110 yards (100 meters) away from the initial location, this prevents playing with submission. Avg. speed cams are not allowed to be submitted.

When the app moves at 25 mph or below, it takes instant coordinates for the submission. At higher speeds it takes 5 seconds ago coordinates,

Since the app sends something outside, it is worth of saying about privacy.
Once the app runs for the very first time, it generates anonymous global unique identifier and then sends it with every outgoing web request. This identifier lives from the moment of installation until the moment of uninstallation and identifies a particular instance of the app (not a user). The purpose of this identifier is to process correctly likes/dislikes for the submitted points and to prevent seeding the points "just for fun".

To de-anonymize/track a user an android app needs to have 'phone' permission granted. Then it has access to Google account (*@gmail.com), or IMEI, or MAC-address.
STA requires only location and storage access (to open downloaded PGPSW files) permissions.

Perfect timing, I'll be going through the M4 Specs zone within the hour.

All downloaded and ready to roll.

My previous alert has auto changed to 15 secs (and 3 secs for Specs) again, perfect.

I'll report back this afternoon

"I was so impressed, I bought the Company (sorry) app."
Well worth the money.

Used it on the way back from a break yesterday. I particularly liked the warnings not to accelerate as there was another trap ahead. Very useful as we had to detour around a closure on the M5.
On the flip side, I couldn't get it to work on the way there as I hadn't quite got it configured and didn't have it connected to the WiFi (so no map). I'm on a low cost monthly plan so ration my network use and have a MiFi in the car for Satnav etc.

Apart from the missing auto-update feature of CA, I'm happy to stay with this until the Samsung S10/Android 10/security patch problem gets sorted (if it does).

Given that I have a built in SatNav and I run a Garmin DS61 for the traffic, that has the latest database on, I don't need another map display so I just display the large green speedo.

What I'm going to test is .... there is a URL option in the database update list:

Trev .... are you thinking what I'm thinking re the URL ?

I only used CA in list mode, not really wanting the map. I am changing from contract to PAYG soon, so how much data is used/ how much it costs to use will be of interest to me. Also, the map isn't seamless, pointer moves from top to bottom of screen before updating. Overall though, I like it, but may put CA on a old company phone so I can continue using it as it will never get Android 10.

I don't have an Android, just an old iPhone 6s Plus.

Does Speedtrap Alert have the option to use TTS to announce the full details of the camera, i.e. Type, speed, and ID? If so, that would make a great verification tool when coupled with a dashcam (that records audio) so the app would read out the site details which the driver and/or passengers could shout out whether to accept or reject the site.

Regards,

Yes it does.

It uses Google TTS very well.

It only uses the iGo based data so unverified cameras aren't highlighted like CA allows.
