There was a significant rise in speeding motorists caught by speed cameras in Thames Valley last year.

Home Office statistics show that 51,409 speeding tickets (a record number) were paid by drivers in 2018, 15% more than the previous year.

Overall, cameras recorded 142,097 violations, but many attended speed awareness courses instead of paying the standard fine. There were also 3,052 offences that resulted in court action.

It was also reported that cameras detected 97% of the 2.1 million offences recorded across England and Wales by police in 2018.

A spokesman for Brake, the road safety charity, commented: "Breaking the speed limit by any amount can have devastating consequences, and drivers who selfishly ignore speed limits put not only themselves, but other road users, at serious risk. Speed cameras play a crucial role in enforcing our traffic laws, and are a proven, cost-effective way of reducing speed and preventing deaths and serious injuries."

He added: "However, road safety isn't just about enforcement, we need safer speed limits, safer vehicles and safer road infrastructure to make sure that no journey ends in tragedy and we all manage to get home to our loved ones safely."

Of course it was. They don't seem to check speeds other than with cameras.

Not true...

The Police also use VASCAR, which is basically a stop watch that works out the time you took to cover a known distance.

They can do this from bridges or when following behind you.

The usual nonsense from Brake.

Brake are saying that if I drive at 30.1mph in a 30mph limit it could be devastating.

But someone could drive at 29mph or less in a 30mph limit that was not paying attention, and kill/injure loads of people, but according to Brake, as they were not speeding it's not a problem.

Ah yes. I forgot that. Really impressive 3% of the total. But it was a rather pointless example of absolutely useless statistics, along with the Brake statement as you pointed out above.

I think it really means the thousands of extra police that will go out on the street on 13th December (so long as you vote for Boris).

There must be. They issue 3% of all speeding tickets. Very Happy

It doesn't say that. It says 97% are done by cameras. You are without justification presuming that police did the remaining 3%, whereas in fact, 2% are done by drivers who go into their local police station and report themselves (hand themselves in). A further 1% are done by fathers going into the local police station and reporting their sons and daughters for speeding.

What? I’d swear he said he would put another 10,000 police on the streets on 13th December?

I wonder how.

They need a lot of law training plus all the other skills they need.

Last I heard it was 3 months full time training.
