We all know that most speed cameras come with warning signs to let drivers know they have to slow down - but new cameras in New South Wales, Australia come with no such warnings.

They are designed to catch motorists who use their mobile phone whilst driving, but they will also catch speeders.

According to the State Government, 100,000 of 85 million drivers who were checked during a trial were recorded using their phones illegally. The initiative should be fully in place by December and will eventually be able to perform 135 million checks by 2023.

The NSW Roads Minister said: "We have to unfortunately use the element of surprise to get people to think, 'well, I could get caught at any time'. I want behaviour to change and I want it changed immediately."

He added "It's not about revenue — it's about saving lives."

The cameras are high-definition, use artificial intelligence and are effective in all weather or light conditions.

The hands-free use of a phone in a cradle is permitted.

This NSW initiative is sorely needed. Anyone caught handling a mobile phone whilst driving - including Police - deserves a major wake-up call. And the excuse of needing my car for my livelihood is not acceptable. We have all had plenty of notice and reminders...

Bring it on, here in Britain.

I agree.

I've seen some horrendous driving, wandering into oncoming traffic, etc, due to loss of attention.

I also see (hear) blasting of horns when the lights go green and someone isn't moving off, 90%+ of the time they're staring at a mobile.

I'm often gobsmacked around Bradford when I see people in brand new Audis, BMWs etc holding a phone in their hand. Pretty sure even the most basic model of these top-end cars will have Bluetooth for phone calls built in as standard...

Anyone moronic enough to use a phone whilst drving would, by definition, be incapable of pairing it.

It's not just people using mobiles that cause loss of attention. It's people eating, drinking, touching up their make-up, .............

The worst offenders for eating and drinking are non-UK registered large HGV's, who don't have the time to stop except when they're forced to have a break. However they're by no means the only offenders. I regularly walk into Derby during the morning rush hour, and there are many people eating and drinking while driving including taxis and private hire vehicles with passengers.

Do the police do anything about it? No chance, because they're doing exactly the same thing.
