Driver behaviour has improved dramatically since average speed cameras were introduced on a "notorious Edinburgh blackspot".

The Old Dalkeith Road has seen a substantial reduction in speeding since the installation of the point-to-point devices. Their presence has seen many more drivers sticking to the 30mph limit.

Since their activation, only two vehicles per day were recorded speeding from October 2017 to June 2019 - previously three in every five vehicles were speeding along that particular stretch.

A spokesman for the Scottish East Safety Camera Unit said: "This was the first installation of an average speed system in an urban area and I am delighted that it has resulted in an improvement in driver behaviour."

He added: "An average speed of 25.6 mph and two offences on average each day shows the effectiveness of this type of speed camera in encouraging drivers to adhere to the speed limit. I would like to thank drivers for making this route safer for all road users."

The cameras were installed following six collisions that involved injuries between 2013 and 2015; three of which involved serious injury or fatality.

Great. They have slowed traffic down nicely and no doubt collected a lot of revenue so doing, but have they reduced the KSI rate? They didn't bother to say other than loosely linking the lower speed with greater safety. What a wishy-washy unsubstantiated statement that was.
