Has a figure been published yet for the trafic module, or will it be free the same as the US version:-

Yes, I posted it a while ago in another thread. £50 one off license and hopefully will be available by end of October.

Dave, although I have Traffic Master freeway which is excellent this is interesting.

I have a GPRS phone, company one, do you know if I have to start my GPRS phone browsing to get the traffic messages or in most cases is the GPRS service always on and just awaits a message? I presume that ALK must want the IP address of my phone to enable it to send messages?

In effect what do I have to do from my end to get this service once I have paid for it?

Once you've paid for traffic (which should be released by end of October) all you will need to make sure is your phone is setup for your network provider to use GPRS.

Once completed, you go into the LIVE menu screen and tell it to enable LIVE and traffic (if using Live you may need to setup a screen name on the website first), and then after this that's it.

CPL5 will connect if it can to the internet automatically if you tick the "automatically connect on startup" or you will have to manually tap the connect button in the LIVE options screen.

CPL5 will then connect at will, when a phone call comes in it drops the GPRS connection and you can accept the phone call, when it realises there's no call in progress it will try and re-establish a GPRS connection. The default send/receive on LIVE is once every 15 mins for the LIVE functionality, I'm not sure of the frequency of Traffic (I think it's a lot more than this).

Traffic is still in beta at the moment and the aim is to only give you traffic incidents on roads you travel (currently it's giving me incidents on connecting roads also) but I prefer this as any accident could create a tailback onto your road.

As a lot of people have found with TomTom, Traffic won't be the be all and end all in making sure you miss a tailback or an accident, I've been caught in several motorway closures to then be notified later that the road is closed or there's an incident, so don't expect it to be 100% perfect, what it should be is just another information source available for you to make decisions with.

With Traffic you will have the option to avoid the incident if you choose to, and it will re-plot a new course, or to continue on the current route.

Still sounds good and allied with my Trafficmaster Freeway should give me what I got the GPS for. Route finding and mainly to avoid getting stuck in traffic jams. Thanks again

I need to get some final confirmation, but my last confirmation was end of October with a fee of £50.

ALK would like to offer this as a one time fee however iTiS are requesting an annual fee from all companies using TMC data. This is something that has hit Navigon recently.

I can say that I have been testing Traffic for the past few months and it's working very well. It does report traffic off of your route on connecting roads (although it's not planned to) but it does work well in notifying you and giving you the option to re-route. Whenever I have been stuck in traffic and given a warning though it's been going up or coming down the M3 so there's very little detour points available.

Any news on the timescales for availability of Traffic? Last heard it was end of October.

Thanks, Pete

Thanks, Dave

I expect you'll be asking them about many of the present problems and wishlist items. Here are mine, in order of priority:
- Fix to the memory leak problem and increase stability (I get the impression that we're still using a beta and 5.0.1.22 didn't really improve things)
- Display of POI’s all the time (I seem to get these only when halted)

- Mute function (e.g. when receiving a phone call)
- If you choose to detour from a planned route, it tries to route you back for too long
- Ability to navigate to motorway junctions and M/A/B road intersections(particularly to use these as waypoints)

- Make the road number legend boxes the same sixe as the text, or at least position the text in the centre of them
- Remove the “1 of 1” in POI alerts using text-to-speech
- Waypoints are transferred from PC to PDA as stops rather than waypoints, and have to be converted
- Easier trip transfer to PDA

I've been experimenting with changing some of the colours quite successfully, but it would be good to know how the generate the hex value for a desired colour!

Keen for the traffic feature. Looking forward to hearing the outcome.

Many thanks
Peter

ALK are currently reading the wishlist, not all features will be implemented, only the ones they feel appropriate, so I won't be taking those to the meeting. However, I can tell you that the memory leak issue is still being addressed by ALk and when they believe they have this sorted a fix will be made available.

I can't give you the full in's and out's but all I can say at the moment is it's waiting for clearance from iTiS. The delay is currently beyond ALK's control. It should be available soon, but I can't define how long soon is.
