The introduction of speed cameras have been brought forward due to a campaign which included the mother of a 16 year old boy, Lewis Crouch, who was killed in a crash in 2017.

The tragic accident happened on Peafield Lane, in Mansfield Woodhouse, Nottinghamshire - there were a further two fatalities on the same road last year.

Nottinghamshire County Council will install 50mph average speed cameras on the road in the summer, earlier than at first planned.

Lewis's mother, Cheryl Broughton said: "Since we lost Lewis we have been campaigning to get cameras up there because even though there were 50mph limit signs, people would be going over that. It's going to make a big impact."

She added: "This is going to make a difference. They are going to change lives and stop other people going through what we did."

A spokesman for the council commented: "We listened to the concerns and investigated how safety could be improved, and after careful examination into the wide range of circumstances involved in these collisions, we concluded average speed cameras were the best and most appropriate solution. Due to the severity of the accidents along the lane, we expect that lower vehicle speeds, will result in a significant reduction in the severity of accidents."

Interesting and careful use of language.

Did they really mean that it will reduce the severity of accidents?

Could be true if the accidents are ALL due to inattention and speed.
However no mention of what would be a more significant mitigation, reducing the probability/frequency of accident/pedestrian collisions for any reason

They seem to be implying 3 accidents over 2 years are tolerable as long as they are serious injuries rather than fatalities !!

It's been proved that average speed cameras do work, in the end.

It takes a few fines for the unobservant speeders to slow down then the procession of traffic, at the correct speed, holds the others back.

The A40 going into London is a joy to watch now with a long procession of vehicles all doing 40. There used to be daily accidents but I've not seen any reports for many months now.
