Average speed cameras on the A55 at Rhuallt Hill in North Wales have caught more that 3,300 motorists driving at 79 MPH or more since June.

The point-to-point cameras are said to have earned more than £300,000 in fines in just their first two months of activity.

The highest speed recorded was 120mph with two others at 118mph and 117mph.

The traffic safety partnership commented: "The A55 is a very busy stretch of road and we understand that the majority of motorists give all due care and consideration to their speed when driving and that it is only a small minority who do not. It is this minority we need to influence into reducing their speed and to keep our roads safe for everyone."

A significant amount of people are still ignorant of how average speed cameras work (including foreign drivers).

Many lose concentration or blatantly ignore the speed limit. It's likely that many believe that the cameras are not actually switched on.

For those who don't know how they work, they use automatic number plate recognition (ANPR) which records the vehicle's number plate at each camera position.

Using the distance between positions, the average speed can be calculated by the time taken to travel between two cameras.
