We've reached the point where satnavs now have a 'value' range. TomTom have announced a new model, the snappily titled TomTom GO Basic.

This model is basic in name only, not only does it include the basic navigation functionality, it also has more powerful hardware, Wi-Fi updating along with smartphone notifications.

It also comes with Lifetime Maps and Traffic updates (Lifetime being as long as TomTom provide support for the model). Available in 5 and 6-inch models prices at £149.99 and £179.99.

I still have my one v4 device, still works after 11 years, then I got a smartphone, and thought, I'll try the app, free version, not very good so opted for the paid version, still rubbish, and no option "like CoPilot" to use it across multiple devices, so I deleted it, I still drag out the old one v4, but the refresh is so slow now it's becoming unusable as much more than an old POI store.

I no longer see the point of stand alone devices, but if I'm missing anything the apps don't do please let me know.

"(Lifetime being as long as TomTom provide support for the model)"

thats the downer with TomTom they can drop support like a drop of a hat... also like the term they use "new maps" these maps can be out of date by years...

Yes standalone has to be the future. It's probably been discussed at length but why on earth have TomTom given up their familiar iPhone application? There must be loads of people like me who were happy with it and, in the same way as I pay for extra storage and various magazines on a regular basis, would be happy to continue on a subscription basis. Did they ask me, or anyone else? Of course not. That's not how know-all companies work. And ultimately fail.

I think there's still a market for them - not everyone has an adequate mount and charger etc in the car. Some people religiously switch their phone off in cars. Some people prefer the bigger screens. Some people, I can't understand why, don't even have smart phones!

I don't like using navigation on my iPhone - it "seems" much smaller than the standalones that I use.

I confess I'm odd - I have two standalones and a built in satnav all running simultaneously and hopefully at least one of them actually works - yesterday my built in one lost satellites when I was hidden in a concrete jungle in central London (Shoe Lane EC4) and thoroughly shrouded in road closures and roadworks, nightmare. It took almost back to Trafalgar Square and half an hour of traffic jams and "Turn around when possible on the roads I wasn't on" before it finally picked up the satellites again. The two standalones worked OK until one of them decided to reboot itself. Sometimes I curse satnavs! (Because I rely on them so much - even when they are misbehaving, it's still usually far better than trying to consult an A-Z on the passenger seat).

I still have a GO 940 Live, though I haven't used it for the last 5-6 months, and it hasn't been updated (Maps or software) for the last 2+ years as I don't want to pat the £100 approx. it would cost. I used to use it in parallel with TomTom GO Mobile on my Android Phone, until I changed my vehicle at the end of last year.

My new vehicle has a Satnav builtin, but I'd not recommend it! Even though the Car is only 6 months old the Maps are at least 2-3 years older than what TomTom use, and the Postcodes are even more out of date. I entered a postcode that I know has been around for a minimum of 4-5 years and it didn't recognise it, and looking for the street found that but it wasn't accurate with roads that lead off it. The cost of updating the maps etc. is at least £120 a time, so I wont be availing myself of that service often, or at all as things stand.

I currently use the builtin Satnav in parallel with TomTom Go Mobile on my Android Phone. The Android is much more re-active to traffic changes, and finds better routes through built up areas, the builtin taking the obvious main routes.

For the last 2+ years I've used TomTom GO on my Android Smartphone and found it far superior to any other Android App I've tried, but also better that the GO 940 Live (which was pretty good). And at £14.99 a year, which includes 4 map updates and the software gets updated by Google Play, is better value than a stand alone.
I can also download whichever Map I want, so I can change from UK & ROI to Western Europe to Europe to whatever when I like, just by downloading the map. I know TomTom Maps lag a little behind with changes, but of late they do seem to be getting major road changes in quicker than they used to.

As things stand I wouldn't go and buy a new standalone, even the cost of the 5" screen Basic is 10 years worth of updates on Android, and I doubt TomTom will allow its life to be that long Very Happy Smile Laughing

No lack of mounts for anything from a phone up to an iPad MaFt, petrol stations have universal ones as does eBay, I got a good case, screen protector, mount and stylus for my iPad 4 £14.

As for not having a smartphone, that's an ego thing, who wants something brighter than themselves Very Happy Very Happy

Not an option with me - I haven’t got anything which is NOT brighter than myself.

That TT GO Basic looks quite a well specd and priced PND.

However, If I were in the market to buy a new SatNav I probably wouldn't look at the GO Basic because its too expensive for a "basic" machine. Equally, if I wanted to buy a SatNav which is more than basic, I probably would't look at the GO Basic because, well, it's got the word "basic" in its name.

I can't work TT out. Confused

They certainly don't appear to be doing themselves any favours.

That's what I thought. I would have thought that 'basic' would have been sub £100.
