Is that so that you know what excessive speed you can do without risk of prosecution? Might just as well set the speed limit to the upper value then. Rolling Eyes

there is never any hard evidence of such a prosecution. True, it would be no defence, but it would seem very unlikely that the 10% +2 is not followed.

It isn't in Spain. I received a ticket for travelling at 85kmh in a 80kmh zone.

Although a Facebook page run by off duty Spanish Police officers (http://bit.ly/2Jfi2tl) seems to say there is a 10% tolerance, I was unlucky...

Couldn't add to my last as no edit

What are the “controls” in place when an average speed is reduced as you are travelling through a monitored average speed zone?

We 'believe' that they will change the speed limit, then allow enough time for everybody to adjust their speed before they activate the changed speed for the cameras. Just guessing.

They'll know who passed the signs after/before the speed limit changed so can then average accordingly.

Why not? It was relevant and quite interesting to see.

Are there any such zones?

It is reported that 10 secs is allowed after a change in limit on a managed motorway but don't thosel have fixed cameras based on individual speed limit signs?

If that was aimed at me personally the answer is no I don't use it as a target speed.
My point was just that other countries have an official tolerance margin rather than a guideline. In France it is 5kph up to 100kph which is a touch over 3mph and gives just a little leeway for a minor trangression whereas the UK is rather generous with 8mph at 60 which some abuse as every trip on any main road or motorway will reveal..

Not aimed at you specifically. But if you are permitted to do (say) 36 in a 30 with no fear pf prosecution, then why not just up the speed limit to 36 was my point. Then everyone can do 36 with no fear of prosecution.

Modern cars are just so quiet and comfy that it's easy to drift over the limit without realising.
This is where the leeway is fair IMO.

What isn't right is deliberately driving at a higher speed because you can get away with it, maybe.

@marksfish, I hope you don't mind me asking, but I'm curious to know. When you were stopped in Spain for 85km/h in an 80 zone, were you in a Spanish registered car or a non-Spanish car? Sadly, it can sometimes make a difference.

I wasn't stopped. It was a Spanish registered hire car. I was caught by cameras at Lorca tunnel when they first came in Sad I have used the shuttle from Almeria to Mojacar since, no no worries for me now Very Happy
