The average speed cameras on the A9 Inverness and Dunblane road in Scotland are being lauded as a success. There had been a significant downturn in accidents and fatalities on the road.

Statistics reveal that 10 fewer people, a reduction from 24 to 14, were killed compared to the three years prior to the cameras' installation in November 2014 - a reduction of almost 40%.

Statistics for serious injuries have also seen a decrease. Down by 16 to 44, which is approximately 25%.

The camera initiative coincided with an increase in the speed limit for heavy goods vehicles from 40mph to 50mph on the stretch of the A9 between Perth and Inverness.

A Member of the Scottish Parliament, David Stewart, does not believe the reason for the success was fully down to the speed cameras.

He says: "I welcome any reduction in the number of fatal and serious injury collisions on the A9. However, I still find it strange that the Scottish National Party claim this reduction is entirely down to the introduction of the average speed cameras. At the same time as the average speed cameras were introduced, so was the increase in the HGV speed."

He argued that: "by reducing the gap between the slowest and fastest vehicles to 10mph, it was proven that this could reduce congestion and, at the same time, reduce frustration and allow traffic to flow better."

It is also reported that the number of speeders on the road has reduced to one in fifteen from one in three.
