I've just returned from a week on the island of Ibiza. I used my own 2548LMT-D in the hire car. With help from Google Earth and Basecamp, I'd pre-loaded a few favourites, like where we were staying, the airport, Amnesia(!), etc. so I was feeling confident about driving around the island.
However, the Garmin routing was very poor, directing us along small side roads when the town we were heading to was clearly sign-posted along the main road. We followed the road signs and in due course the Garmin recalculated and caught up.
I also had great difficulty finding towns, supermarkets (Aldi?), fuel (Repsol, Galp) and viewpoints with the Garmin. Perhaps there is a language issue (Spanish v Catalan)?
The included POI data for Ibiza seems way out date (I have the latest European maps 2018.3) or significantly incomplete, but overall the device became more trouble than it was worth.
It became so bad we used Google maps on my phone, even when returning to the apartment.
It's not going to be long before I can get a large and cheap 4G package and junk the Garmin.

Guess it's horses for courses, on holiday I wouldn't want to be using the main roads, preferring instead to explore the countryside. If I did want to stick to the main roads I'd do what you did and follow the signs.
A quick search on my DriveSmart in Simulated mode shows numerous petrol stations, restaurants, other POIs etc. How up to date they are I have no idea. Small towns are also searchable so not sure why you were having an issue, are you sure you have full map coverage for Ibiza? _________________ Where there's a will ... there's a way.

Yes, I have full coverage. And like you, I did a simulated check before leaving and felt all was OK.
The POIs are definitely out of date or incomplete. Being shown as the nearest filling station was no guarantee it was still there or indeed a filling station. The nearest Aldi was shown as in Valencia though we knew there were three on the island as they were shown on the basic map from the car hire people - but no address, only a rough location.
Street names could be in either Catalan, Spanish or both, but the Garmin's index is inconsistent, names being in one or the other language but seemingly not both.
Country routes in Ibiza have seemingly unrestricted speed limits but often require a 4×4.
