After the most recent map update it left loads of huge files behind, again.

To check in Windows Explorer:

Right click the C:\ drive and in the search box type in.

You may find a load of entries pointing to Garmin~CoreService.

If you want you can delete them.

On mine it returned about 20 files and right in the middle were a load of them with Garmin and CoreService and Map in the filepath and filename.

My guess is they were left over from the map update a few days ago.

I probably only had 20 files compared to your list because I maintain my PC. Laughing Laughing Laughing

I have 3 folders in C:\ProgramData\Garmin\CoreService\Downloads\Map one folder for each of the 3 map updates which I have downloaded since owning a Garmin device.

Each folder contains many subfolders and files. In total there is about 30Gb of data (3 x 10Gb).

Are you saying that it is safe to delete all of this?

I have, without issue.

What Garmin does is it downloads map updates in a series of small files to the C:/. That's so if it baulks and you have to restart the download it doesn't have to start from scratch.

When Garmin Express shows 'building files' that's when it's creating the final large, unit file from the small ones.

It more often than not leaves these behind clogging up your C:/ drive. If like me you have a smallish SSD it can be a problem.

Thank you. I don't have an SSD at all :-( but I don't like stuff clogging up my HDD.

I'll delete them. Can always recover them from a backup if it causes a problem.

Also if you have multiple devices to update you won't have to download the map files again.

Yes, delete them from Garmin/CoreService when happy that all is running OK.

But don't delete them from Garmin/Maps, otherwise they won't be available for BaseCamp or MapSource.
