A satnav error has been blamed for a pilot crashing his light aircraft.

The GPS guidance system reportedly sent him to a landing strip that didn't exist in the Aberdeenshire area of Scotland.

The plane struck a wall and flipped over on landing suffering "substantial damage". The 53-year-old pilot, who holds a US flying licence, and his passenger, managed to escape unharmed.

The Air Accidents Investigation Branch (AAIB) were told by navigation company Garmin that the location was "not in the current database".

The AAIB confirmed that it was not a recognised airfield saying: "The airfield the pilot was attempting to locate does not appear to exist."

It can be assumed that the pilot was using an old database.

The article doesn't say anything about it being a vehicle satnav.

Garmin make a range of GPS based navigation systems for aircraft use, and like any other satnav systems, you need to keep the database up to date.

I guess it's possible that the pilot or a third party had previously identified a suitable landing field and had inserted it as a phantom waypoint colocated to a known Garmin database fix - I have done similar in the past, but not at low level!

As a matter of interest early SatNavs were required by the FAA to have an 80knot speed limit in order to prevent misuse of handheld consumer units when airborne
