The penalty for using a mobile phone whilst driving has risen today to £200 and 6 points.

Any new drivers, under 2 years, will have to retake their thoery and practical tests again as their licence will be revoked.

However

What has been highlighted on this mornings news programs is that, even in a holder, you should not touch the phone if driving. They advise, if using your phone as a navigation device, setting your destination before you set off.

That bit hasn't been widely published. Plus, I imagine the same applies to windscreen mounted SatNav devices.

Wonder if the news is right about mounted devices and does this action leave you open to prosecution?

If so, then when it pops up with a traffic based detour wanting you to accept or reject you could be open to a fine.

Think the TV is wrong. What you're always open to is not being in full control, that can apply if you're eating a sandwich or touching a satnav. The specific offence on phones only applies if the phone is in your hand, as far as I'm aware. Will ask for clarification from a friend in our local RPU and report back.

It's going to be difficult to detect whether it's a quick touch or replying to a text.

If it is OK then I suspect that a tap will be okay, multiple taps not .... And a check of the phone will reveal whether it was texting Wink
